About this journal

Open Access Policy

Beginning in 2025, Restaurator will transition to Gold Open Access on a year-by-year basis. All articles will be immediately available under the Creative Commons CC-BY license at no cost to authors (authors retain rights). This Open Access transformation is supported by the Subscribe-to-Open model, which enables full transformation through the continuation of existing subscriptions. The editors and publisher De Gruyter thank all subscribers whose continued support has made this transition possible.

Aims and Scope

Restaurator is an international journal dedicated exclusively to the preservation and conservation of library and archival materials, as well as works of art on paper in fine art collections. The journal focuses on tangible cultural heritage objects made from paper, parchment, and related organic materials.

Target Audience:

  • Conservators
  • Librarians and archivists
  • Collection and conservation managers
  • Conservation educators and students
  • Heritage scientists

Editorial Policy

Articles examine critical aspects of preservation and conservation, including treatment options, technology, workflow, and large-scale project organization. The journal emphasizes scientific foundations, featuring research on new preservation techniques and improvements to established methods. We prioritize articles of international interest while welcoming contributions addressing lesser-studied cultures. All manuscripts must demonstrate clear relevance to tangible heritage preservation based on sound scientific principles.

We do not accept works that merely repeat well-established procedures, case studies of purely local interest, or contributions focused on preservation of born-digital collections, virtual environments, digital continuum, or long-term preservation of digital assets.

Topics of Interest

We seek contributions on the following topics related to conservation and preservation of archival and library materials and works of art on paper:

Research and Practice

  • Technical studies and case studies of international significance
  • Innovative methodology and advances in conservation practice
  • Research studies and examination methods for works of art
  • New research in artistic materials analysis and deterioration mechanisms

Collections Management

  • Collections care and preventive conservation
  • Risk assessment and mitigation strategies for cultural heritage
  • Display and storage considerations

Professional Development

  • Conservation education
  • Ethics in conservation
  • Position papers
  • Conservation history and the history of materials and technological processes

Environmental Interactions

  • Relationships between heritage items and environmental factors including climate, microclimate, light, pollution, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

Restaurator. International Journal for the Preservation of Library and Archival Material publishes special and thematic issues focussed on important and emerging topics in the field of study. The journal has established a rigorous process to ensure that any special issue manuscripts follow the same high-quality standards and peer review processes as regular manuscripts. For further information on the journal’s peer review policy please see the "Instructions for Authors".

The journal accepts original research articles, technical notes, reviews, and letters to the editors. While there are no strict length requirements, concise contributions are preferred. Authors of manuscripts exceeding 10,000 words may be asked to shorten their submissions. Articles are published in English with abstracts in both English and German. Special thematic issues are published periodically.

Every submission will undergo a double-blind peer review with at least two external reviewers and might be checked for plagiarism.

As per De Gruyter policy, no author list changes are permitted after acceptance of an article. The De Gruyter production team is instructed to enforce this policy during the production/proofing process.
