SUMMARIES For millennia parchment has been used as a writing material, commonly in the form of books, scrolls or folded sheets. Parchment is made from animal skins, predominantly from calf, sheep or goat. Parchment and skins have the characteristic molecular packing associated with other collagen rich structures such as tendon, aorta, bone and cornea. For medical purposes such tissues are usually analysed as close to the in vivo state as possible (hydrated and not degraded). This has allowed for a wealth of information to be elucidated concerning the structure of collagen and its hierarchical arrangements from the molecular structure to the fibrils to the organisation of fibres in a tissue. The main considerations in understanding the structure of parchment at the molecular level is that parchment exists in the dry state, and that it has been subjected to varying levels of deterioration brought about by external factors. This review centres on the structure of collagen within parchment. Discussed are the in vivo structure of collagen in skin, alterations to the structure of collagen and alterations to the hierarchical arrangement of collagen brought about by the parchment preparation process and deterioration of collagen structure that is associated with parchment degradation over time.   Le parchemin a été utilisé pendant des millénaires en tant que support de l'écriture, la plupart du temps sous forme de livres, de rouleaux ou de feuilles pliées. Le parchemin est fabriqué à partir de peaux de bêtes, surtout de veaux, de moutons et de chèvres. Le parchenmin et les peaux manifestent des structures moléculaires caractéristiques qui sont associées à d'autres structures riches en collagène, telles que les tendons, les artères, les os et la cornée. En médecine ces substances sont généralement analysées le plus étroitement possible dans leur état in vivo, c.-à.-d. fortement hydratées et non encore dégradées. Ces analyses ont permis d'obtenir une foule d'informations servant à élucider la structure du collagène et des arrangements hiérarchiques allant de la structure moléculaire en passant par les fibrilles et aboutissant à la disposition des fibres du parchemin. La réflexion la plus importante pour comprendre la structure du parchemin à partir de son groupement moléculaire porte sur le fait que le parchemin existe à l'état desséché et que lors de sa fabrication il a été soumis à différents processus de dégradation sous l'action de facteurs externes. La présente analyse se concentre sur la composition et la structure du collagène contenu dans le parchemin. On discutera de sa structure in vivo dans la peau et des altérations de la structure de collagène ainsi que des altérations des arrangements hiérarchiques du collagène apportés au cours du processus de fabrication du parchemin et de la détérioration de la structure du collagène associée à la dégradation du parchemin qui se produit à long terme.   Pergament wurde über Jahrtausende als Beschreibstoff gebraucht, meist als Buch, als Rolle oder als gefaltetes Blatt. Pergament wird aus der Haut von Tieren gewonnen, überwiegend von Kälbern, Schafen und Ziegen. Pergament und Haut zeigen charakteristische molekulare Anordnungen, die mit anderen überwiegend aus Collagen bestehenden Strukturen wie Sehnen, Adern, Knochen, Hornhaut etc. zusammenhängen. In der Medizin werden diese Substanzen so eng als möglich zu ihrem Zustand im lebenden Körper analysiert, d.h. stark wasserhaltig und noch nicht abgebaut. Diese Forschungen bieten eine Fülle von Informationen über die molekulare und übermolekulare Struktur von Collagen sowie den Aufbau und die Anordnung der daraus bestehenden Fibrillen in einem Material wie Pergament. Der wichtigste Faktor zum Verständnis von Pergament aus seiner Molekularstruktur ist, daß es in getrocknetem Zustand vorliegt und daß bei seiner Herstellung Abbauvorgänge in unterschiedlichem Ausmaß stattfanden, die von äußeren Umständen bestimmt wurden. Die Untersuchung gilt der Zusammensetzung des Collagens im Pergament. Es werden dessen Struktur in vivo in der Haut und die Veränderungen in Aufbau und Anordnung sowie die Abbauvorgänge diskutiert, die im Laufe der Pergamentherstellung und später, d.h. bei langfristiger Aufbewahrung stattfinden.

SUMMARIES Four different kinds of paper, consisting of different pulps, were submitted to treatment within an atmosphere of carbon dioxide concentrations at 100% RH, as it is suggested for the disinfecting of art objects. The treatment atmosphere was conditioned by argon or air respectively. As a general observation there was a negligible influence on the mechanical properties of the cotton and pure cellulose samples and a much greater negative effect on the properties of groundwood containing paper, manifested in reduced folding endurance, which is the most sensitive parameter. Quatre sortes de papier, différentes dans la composition de leurs fibres, ont été soumises à un traitement dans une atmosphère de dioxyde de carbone à 100% de HR, telle qu'il est préconisé dans la lutte pour désinfecter les objets d'art. L'atmosphère de traitement a été conditionnée respectivement par de l'argon et de l'air normal. En général on peut constater que le traitement a eu une influence négligeable sur les propriétés mécaniques des échantillons de coton et de cellulose pure mais un effet beaucoup plus négatif sur les propriétés du papier contenant de la pâte à bois, surtout en ce qui concerne la réduction de la résistance au pliage, qui est le paramètre le plus sensible. Vier Arten von Papier, verschieden in der Art ihrer Fasern, wurden einer Behandlung mit Kohlendioxid-Atmosphere bei 100% RF unterworfen, wie sie zur Bekämpfung von Insektenbefall bei Kunstwerken empfohlen wird. Die Behandlungsatmosphäre enthielt einen Anteil von Argon bzw. von normaler Luft. Als generelles Ergebnis ist zu konstatieren, daß die Behandlung einen geringen, wenn auch nicht ganz zu leugnenden negativen Einfluß auf die mechanische Festigkeit von Baumwoll- und Zellstoffpapier und einen wesentlich größeren auf holzstoffhaltiges hat, jedenfalls wenn man die Falzzahl, den empfindlichsten Parameter betrachtet.

SUMMARIES The FCIR method for analysing iron gallotannate ink has been applied to some practical cases, i.e. for identifying the chemical quality of script and drawing on historical documents which to the naked eye appear indiscriminately black, in the same way as paper that is heavily decayed by ink corrosion. Using FCIR those consisting of iron gallotannate ink appear as red while the corroded paper remains black, thus allowing us to see the amount of damage. La méthode FCIR servant à analyser l'encre gallique a été appliquée à certains cas pratiques, p. ex. pour identifier la qualité chimique de certains écrits et dessins contenus dans des documents historiques et qui apparaissent tous noirs à l'oeil nu de la même façon que le papier qui a été fortement dégradé par une corrosion à l'encre. L'utilisation de la méthode FCIR permet de mettre en évidence la couleur rouge de l'encre gallique alors que le papier corrodé reste invariablement noir, ainsi il est possible d'évaluer le degré de la détérioration. Es wird über die praktische Anwendung der Falschfarben-Infrarotphotographie zum Erkennen von Eisengallustinte berichtet, nämlich zur Unterscheidung von Schrift und Zeichnungsstrichen in historischen Objekten, die für das bloße Auge unterschiedslos schwarz erscheinen, ebenso wie Papier, das bereits stark tintenfraßgeschädigt ist. . Bei Anwendung der genannten optischen Methode erscheint Eisengallustinte als rot, geschädigtes Papier aber unverändert als schwarz, was eine Einschätzung des Schadensgrades erlaubt.

SUMMARIES In the context of a larger research project on the recovery of books and documents stored in libraries and archives and further of an analogous work related to cellulose just published, three different types of printed paper (newspaper, magazine paper, “permanent durable” paper) were submitted to two different experimental trials. In the first the papers were irradiated by gamma rays, while in the second they were also subjected to thermal accelerated ageing. The assessment was made by observing the extent of the damage that the Periplaneta americana (American cockroach) was able to do to the different and differently treated papers, in the form of erosion during the following storage period. The results indicate that the papers irradiated with doses up to 10 kGy do not show greater erosion damage compared to the untreated papers. The same is true for papers subjected to the combined treatment of irradiation + ageing. In the case of very high irradiation dose (100 and 200 kGy) a relationship between the quantity of radiation absorbed by the paper and the “desirability” for the chewing insects was observed. This effect is significantly higher after the combined treatment, at least for two of the papers. Finally considerations on the practical importance of these phenomena are presented. Dans le contexte d'un projet de recherche important relatif à la protection des livres et documents stockés dans les archives et bibliothèques ainsi que dans le cadre d'un projet analogue qui vient juste d'être publié sur la cellulose trois sortes différentes de papier (papier journal, papier couché, papier « permanent durable ») ont été soumises à deux traitements différents : d'une part à une irradiation aux rayons gamma et d'autre part à un traitement de vieillissement accéléré thermique. L'évaluation a été faite en observant l'étendue du dommage que le cafard américain (Periplaneta americana) avait été capable de provoquer aux différents échantillons de papiers différemment traités pendant la période de stockage qui a suivi l'expérience. Les résultats indiquent que les papiers irradiés à des doses allant jusqu'à 10 kGy ne provoquent pas de plus grands dégâts d'érosion que ceux observés sur des papiers non traités. Ceci est également valable pour les papiers soumis au traitement combiné de l'irradiation plus du vieillissement. Dans le cas d'une forte dose d'irradiation (entre 100 et 200 kGy) on a observé qu'il existait une relation entre la quantité de radiation absorbée par le papier et l'attrait exercé sur l'appétit des insectes rongeurs. Cet effet est considérablement renforcé après le vieillissement artificiel, en tout cas pour deux des trois sortes de papier analysées. Enfin des réflexions concernant la signification pratique de ces phénomènes observés seront présentées. Im Kontext eines größeren Forschungsprojektes zum Schutz von Büchern und Urkunden bei der Aufbewahrung in Bibliothek und Archiv, und weiter im Kontext eines kürzlich veröffentlichten entsprechenden Projektes über Cellulose wurden drei verschiedene Papiersorten (hoch holzhaltig, gestrichen, alkalisch gepuffert) zwei verschiedenen Behandlungen unterworfen: zum einen einer Gamma-Bestrahlung und zum anderen zusätzlich einer beschleunigten Hitzealterung. Zur Auswertung wurde das Ausmaß des Schadens herangezogen, den die Amerikanische Schabe ( Periplaneta americana ) den Proben während der auf das Experiment folgenden Zeit zufügte. Es zeigte sich, daß eine Bestrahlung in einer Stärke bis zu 10 kGy nicht anfälliger für Insektenfraß macht; das gleiche gilt für die kombinierte Behandlung (Bestrahlung plus Alterung). Bei sehr hoher Strahlungsdosis (100 and 200 kGy) ist eine Relation zwischen der vom Papier aufgenommenen Strahlung und seiner Attraktivität als Insektennahrung zu beobachten. Dieser Effekt ist nach beschleunigter Alterung deutlich höher, jedenfalls für zwei der drei untersuchten Papiersorten. Zum Schluß werden Überlegungen zur praktischen Bedeutung der referierten Beobachtungen angestellt.

SUMMARIES A new technique for improving the durability of rosin-alum sized paper is described, i.e. using chitosan as a polymer for surface treatment. Samples of such paper were dipped in 0.2% and 0.4% chitosan 1% acetic acid, using sodium hydroxide or sodium silicate as precipitators. After accelerated ageing for different periods mechanical and optical qualities of the samples were measured. IR-spectroscopy was used to determine the mean strength of hydrogen bonds (MSHB) and the relative absorbance of carbonyl groups (E c = o ) of both unaged and aged samples. In a second test series the samples were first aged and then submitted to chitosan treatment. The results show that the type of alkali for precipitation of chitosan is of crucial importance. Generally it can be stated that chitosan-treatment in the higher concentration (0.4%) and precipitated with sodium silicate can improve the durability of alum-rosin sized paper made from short fibre and that it can also improve the durability of such paper that has already suffered some decay from ageing.   On donne la description d'une nouvelle technique visant à améliorer la durabilité du papier précipité à l'alun et gommé à la résine, en utilisant par exemple le chitosan comme polymère pour le traitement de la surface. Des échantillons de cette sorte de papier ont été plongés dans du chitosan à 0,2% et 0,4% à 1% d'acide acétique en utilisant de l'hydroxyde de sodium ou du silicate de sodium comme agents de précipitation. Après le traitement de vieillissement accéléré sur différentes durées les échantillons ont été mesurés afin de tester leur résistance mécanique et leurs altérations optiques. La spectroscopie infra-rouge (IR-spectroscopy) a été utilisée pour déterminer l'intensité de liaison des ponts d'hydrogène (MSHB) et l'absorption relative des groupes carbonyles (E c = o ) de deux groupes d'échantillons vieillis et non vieillis artificiellement. Dans une seconde série de tests les échantillons ont d'abord été soumis au vieillissement artificiel avant d'être traités au chitosan. Les résultats indiquent que le genre d'alcali utilisé comme agent de précipitation du chitosan a une importance capitale. Globalement on peut constater que le traitement au chitosan, dans sa concentration la plus forte (0,4%) et précipitée au moyen de silicate de sodium, peut renforcer la durabilité du papier gommé à la résine et fabriqué à partir de fibres courtes et qu'il peut également améliorer la résistance du papier qui a déjà souffert des détériorations du vieillissement.   Es wird eine neue Methode zur Verbesserung der Alterungsbeständigkeit von alaungefällt harzgeleimten Papier beschrieben, nämlich die Oberflächenbehandlung mit polymerem Chitosan. Proben von solchem Papier wurden getaucht in Chitosan 0.2% bzw. 0.4% in 1%iger Essigsäure, wobei Natriumhydroxid bzw. Natriumsilikat als Fällungsmittel dienten. Nach beschleunigter Alterung über verschiedene Zeiträume wurden Messungen zur mechanischen Festigkeit und zur optischen Veränderung durchgeführt. Die Stärke der Wasserstoffbrückenbindung (MSHB) und die relative Absorption von Carbonylgruppen (E c = o ) wurde durch IR-Spektroskopie ermittelt. In einer zweiten Versuchsserie wurden die Proben zuerst gealtert und dann mit Chitosan behandelt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, daß das zur Fällung eingesetzte Alkali von entscheidenber Bedeutung ist. Insgesamt kann festgestellt werden, daß eine Behandlung mit Chitosan in der höheren Konzentration (0,4%) die Alterungsbeständigkeit von alaungefällt harzgeleimten Papier aus Kurzfaserstoff verbessern kann. Das gilt auch für solches Papier, das bereits Alterungssschäden erlitten hat.

SUMMARIES The samples in our research were different kinds of paper, to which chromophores, i.e. oxidative degradation products of groundwood papers were added. In the first part several parameters of pure cellulose paper were checked, for the second one papers which already contained those degradation products, i.e. just the very groundwood papers from which the added degradation products were extracted were studied. We were mainly interested in the changes provoked by light with both high and reduced levels of UV. Finally, some recommendations are given as to how to preserve and exhibit groundwood papers, including those which have been deacidified using a solution of methanolic methyl magnesium carbonate. Ont été étudiés différents échantillons de papier auxquels on a ajouté des chromophores, produits de dégradation oxydative du papier à base de pâte mécanique. Dans un premier temps plusieurs paramètres du papier de cellulose pure ont été testés. Ensuite on a analysé des échantillons de papier qui contenaient déjà ces produits de dégradation, c'est-à-dire les papiers à pâte mécanique dont on avait extrait les produits de dégradation ajoutés. L'intérêt de cette étude portait surtout sur les changements des paramètres provoqués par l'effet de l'intensité faible ou forte des rayons ultra-violets de la lumière. Finalement certains conseils sont donnés pour conserver et exposer les papiers à base de pâte mécanique, y compris ceux qui ont été désacidifiés au moyen d'une solution méthylique au carbonate de magnésium. Gegenstand der Untersuchungen ist Papier, dem Abbauprodukte zugefügt wurden, wie sie durch Oxidation in Holzschliffpapier gebildet werden. Für den ersten Teil wurde reines Zellstoffpapier entsprechend behandelt, für den hier referierten zweiten Papiere, die solche Abbauprodukte bereits enthalten, nämlich eben die Holzschliffpapiere, von denen die zusätzlich hinzugefügten Abbauprodukte gewonnen worden waren. Die Untersuchungen galten vor allem der Veränderung, die bestimmte Meßparameter unter dem Einfluß von Licht mit hohen und mit reduzierten UV-Anteil erfahren. Als Ergebnis werden Ratschläge zur Aufbewahrung zur Beleuchtung von Holzschliffpapieren gegeben, auch solchen, die eine Entsäuerungsbehandlung mit methanolischer Lösung von Methylmagnesiumcarbonat erfahren haben.
