The study evaluated the effect of various chemical bleaching agents on the long-term colour stability of paper and on the discoloration caused by foxing stains. Five different historical paper samples, covered with foxing stains, were characterized. Several spots were tested for the presence of transitional metal ions using laser-ablation-ICP-MS; the fibre composition and pH of the paper were also determined. Colour changes, experienced by the discoloured areas and the paper after washing and deacidification and subsequent to the application of one of the five different bleaching solutions investigated, were followed using scanned images. CIELAB values were determined with Photoshop 7.0 software. The effect of different bleaching solution applications on the colour stability of the treated paper during thermal ageing was evaluated as well. Results indicate that when higher concentration of iron ions are present in the paper, treatment with the complexing agent EDTA and sodium dithionite efficiently brightens the foxing stains and the paper and improves their colour stability. In this study, it was shown that for papers with low transitional metal content, washing and deacidification, as well as the application of sodium borohydride, gave superior results when compared to hydrogen peroxide or calcium hypochlorite treatments. Zusammenfassung In dieser Studie wurden verschiedene Bleichreagenzien auf die langfristige Farbstabilität von Papier getestet, das durch Stockflecken erzeugte Verfärbung aufwies. Fünf stockfleckige historische Papiere wurden charakterisiert. Einige Flecke wurden mithilfe von laser-ablation-ICP-MS auf die Präsenz von Übergangsmetallionen getestet; zudem wurde der Fasergehalt und pH der Papiere bestimmt. Die Farbveränderung der Papiere nach Wässerung, Entsäuerung und nach der Anwendung jeweils einer der fünf ausgewählten Bleichlösungen wurde anhand von gescannten Bildern überprüft. Die CIELAB Werte wurden mithilfe der Photoshop 7.0 software bestimmt. Der Effekt der Anwendung verschiedener Bleichlösungen auf die Farbstabilität der behandelten Papiere während der künstlichen Alterung bei erhöhter Temperatur wurde ebenfalls bestimmt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass bei einer höheren Konzentration von Eisenionen im Papier, die Behandlung mit dem Komplexbildner EDTA und Natriumdithionit die Stockflecken entfärbt und die Stabilität des Papiers gegenüber Wiederbildung dieser Flecken (colour reversion). Die Studie zeigte, dass Papiere mit einem niedrigen Eisengehalt von der Wässerung und Entsäuerung wie auch von der Behandlung mit Natriumborhydrid profitierten, verglichen mit einer Behandlung durch Wasserstoffperoxid und Calciumhypochlorit. Résumé L'objectif de cette étude était de tester l'effet de divers agents blanchissants sur la stabilité du papier présentant une coloration due aux taches de moisissure. On a ainsi pu établir une typologie de cinq types de papier historiques présentant des taches de moisissure. A l'aide d'un traitement laser ablatif ICP-MS on a pu déterminer la présence d'ions métalliques transitoires, la composition de la fibre et le degré d'acidité du papier ont été aussi établis. Sur des images scannées on a pu suivre les changements survenus sur les surfaces décolorées et sur papier après plusieurs traitements, notamment bain en solution aqueuse et déacidification, suite aux applications des cinq processus blanchissants les résultats ont été testés grâce aux prises de vue. Les valeurs CIELAB ont été établies avec le logiciel Photoshop 7.0. Les résultats de l'utilisation de divers agents de blanchiment sur le vieillissement artificiel du papier traité à température élevé ont été aussi obtenus. Selon ces résultats, lors d'une concentration plus forte d'ions ferreux dans le papier, le traitement avec l'agent complexe EDTA et le sodium dithionite a réussi à effectivement éclaircir les taches de moisissure du papier et à améliorer la stabilité couleur. Au cours de cette étude, on a établi que, pour le papier contenant une faible quantité de métal ferreux, les deux procédés – bain aqueux et déacidification – ainsi que l'application d'hydrure borique de soude sodium borohyde ont généré de bien meilleurs résultats comparés à ceux obtenus avec des traitements au peroxyde d'hydrogène ou à l'hypochlorite de calcium.

In this paper, the infrared imaging of a 16 th century Turkish manuscript using a standard digital camera equipped with a basic infrared filter is described. By using this material the original text, totally unreadable due to the darkening of the iron induced corroded paper can be made visible again. Zusammenfassung Wir berichten über die Infrarotaufnahme eines türkischen Manuskripts aus dem 16. Jahrhundert mithilfe einer digitalen Kamera, die mit einem einfachen IR Filter ausgestattet wurde. Diese Methode ermöglichte die Sichtbarmachung des originalen Texts, der vollständig unleserlich war aufgrund der Verfärbung des Papiers, die durch eisen-induzierte Korrosionserscheinungen eingetreten war. Résumé Nous avons référé sur un document photo infrarouge fait sur un manuscrit turc datant du 16 e siècle, document généré par un appareil photo numérique courant équipé d'un simple filtre infrarouge. Grâce à cette méthode le texte original est apparu, ce texte était devenu parfaitement illisible à cause de la détérioration de la couleur du papier ayant foncé suite à la corrosion produite par le fer.

Most museums, libraries, and archives throughout the world have to deal with paper damaged by iron gall ink. For more than a decade international research has been devoted to the topic in an attempt to provide practical treatments for objects and formulate guidelines for the preservation of iron gall ink collections. A working group of conservators in South and Central America and the Caribbean have developed a program to disseminate research findings, collect data about the condition of iron gall ink collections in their countries and identify imminent training needs. The goal of this project is to combine the latest research with existing and acceptable conservation practices and share information about risk management, proper housing, examination and treatment of iron gall ink inscribed artefacts-at risk. Communications among colleagues were established to learn more about the current resources available in collections from various countries. Zusammenfassung Viele Museen, Bibliotheken und Archive in der ganzen Welt müssen sich mit der Erhaltung von Kulturgut auf Papier befassen, das durch Tintenfraß gefährdet ist. Im vergangenen Jahrzehnt hat sich die Konservierungswissenschaft mit der Entwicklung von Behandlungstechniken für gefährdete Objekte befasst und Richtlinien für den Erhalt von tintenfraßgeschädigtem Sammlungsgut formuliert. In jüngster Zeit hat sich eine Arbeitsgruppe von Restauratoren in Mittel-, Südamerika und der Karibik gebildet mit dem Ziel, den aktuellen Forschungsstand in ihren Regionen zu vermitteln, Daten zum Erhaltungszustand entsprechender Bestände zu erfassen und schließlich die Erfordernisse für den Ausbildungsbedarf zu definieren. Das Ziel dieses Projektes ist es, aus dem aktuellen Forschungsstand geeignete und akzeptable Erhaltungsstrategien zu entwickeln. Das schließt die Vermittlung von Informationen bezüglich geeigneter Verwahrungsbedingungen in den genannten Regionen, von Untersuchungstechniken, von Risk-Management und Behandlungsverfahren ein. Die Kommunikation innerhalb der Arbeitsgruppe konnte so weit etabliert werden, dass Kenntnisse über die vorhandenen Resourcen in den Regionen vorliegen. Résumée Dans le monde entier de nombreux musées, bibliothèques et archives sont confrontés avec la conservation du patrimoine concernant les documents sur papier endommagé par des taches de rouille. Au cours des dix dernières années le secteur scientifique de la conservation s'est consacré à l'évolution des processus de traitements applicables aux objets menacés de destruction et a créé une documentation regroupant des directives pour la conservation de collections présentant des piqûres dues aux taches de rouille. Récemment un groupe de travail composé de restaurateurs originaires d'Amérique centrale, d'Amérique du Sud et des Caraïbes a choisi comme objectif de mener une enquête sur l'état actuel de la recherche scientifique sur leurs territoires, il s'agit de pratiquer une saisie de données relatives à l'état de conservation de documents existants, ceci afin de définir alors les impératifs majeurs en matière de formation professionnelle. Ce projet s'est fixé comme objectif le développement de stratégies de conservation valables basées sur l'état actuel des connaissances scientifiques. Ceci implique la recherche d'informations concernant les conditions adéquates de conservation dans les régions citées, les méthodes d'analyse, la gestion du risque et les processus de traitement sont les éléments majeurs de cette recherche. Les ressources présentes dans ces régions ont déjà été mises en évidence grâce à la communication instaurée au sein de ce groupe de travail.

Corrosive iron and copper ions and acids in iron gall inks and in certain pigments such as verdigris and malachite lead to enhanced degradation of paper. A recent EC co-funded project “InkCor” proposed the use of tetraalkylammonium bromides in combination with magnesium ethoxide in alcoholic solution for stabilizing these media. In the present paper, the potential stabilising effect of another type of antioxidants - alkylimidazolium bromides - is compared to the one achieved using either an aqueous calcium or magnesium phytate treatment or a non-aqueous solution of tetrabutylammonium bromide in combination with magnesium ethoxide in ethanol. Two new antioxidants, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide and 1-butyl-2,3-dimethyl-imidazolium bromide, in combination with alkali magnesium ethoxide in ethanol, effectively stabilised iron gall ink containing model paper. The effect of stabilisation was superior to the previously studied antioxidants, i.e. tetraalkylammonium bromides and the two phytates. No negative side effects on the colour of the ink were observed, which makes the two antioxidants appealing alternatives to the currently used aqueous calcium phytate treatment. The study was extended also to the model papers containing corrosive copper pigments verdigris and malachite. The most effective treatment solution in this case was composed of tetrabutylammonium bromide and magnesium ethoxide in alcoholic solution. Although no negative side effects on paper containing iron gall ink or copper pigments were observed, it is imperative that the effects of the treatment solutions are studies also on a number of historical samples, before they are used for stabilisation of historical artefacts.   Zusammenfassung Migrationsfähige Eisen- und Kupferionen, sowie saure Komponenten in Eisengallustinten, und Kupferionen in kupferhaltigen Pigmenten, wie z. B. Grünspan und Malachit können einen beschleunigten Abbau von Papier verursachen. In jüngster Zeit gab es Fortschritte in der Entwicklung von nicht-wässrigen Behandlungslösungen für derartige Schäden auf der Basis eines alkalisch gestellten Antioxidants. Allerdings sind diese Lösungen bisher am Markt nicht erhältlich. In diesem Beitrag wird die stabilisierende Wirkung von Alkylimidazobromiden bei der Behandlung von Papierschäden, die durch Übergangsmetallionen katalysiert werden, mit den stabilisierenden Effekten verglichen, die durch eine nicht-wässrige Behandlung von Tetrabutylamoniumbromid bzw. und eine wässrige Behandlung mit Calciumphytat erreicht werden können. Die zwei untersuchten neuen Antioxidantien 1-Ethyl-3-Methylimidazolbromid (EMINBr) und 1-Othyl-2,3-Dimethyl-Imidazolbromid (BDMINBr) führen in Verbindung mit Magnesiumethoxyd in Ethanol zu einer effektiven Stabilisierung von Modellpapieren auf die Eisengallustinten aufgetragen waren. Der stabilisierende Effekt war gegenüber den bereits früher untersuchten Antioxydantien, Tetraalkylbromiden und Calciumphytat deutlich besser. Nebeneffekte, wie z. B. die Verfärgung des Tintenauftrages konnten als Folge der Behandlung nicht beobachtet werden. Dies macht die beiden Verbindungen zu interessanten Alternativen zur gegenwärtig eingesetzten wässrigen Behandlung mit Calciumphytat. Darüber hinaus konnte gezeigt werden, dass Papiere mit Aufstrichen von Kupferpigmenten wie Grünspan und Malachit ebenfalls erfolgreich chemisch stabilisiert werden konnten. Die effektivste Behandlung ermöglichte in diesen Fällen eine Lösung aus Tetramethylamoniumbromid in Kombination mit Magnesiumethoxyd in Ethanol. Die Behandlung zeigte keine Nebenwirkungen auf Farbaufstrich oder Papier. Es ist allerdings ratsam, dass die Behandlung an historischem Probenmaterial verifi ziert wird   Résumé Les ions corrosifs de fer et de cuivre ainsi que les acides dans les encres ferro-galliques ferriques ainsi que dans le vert-de-gris et la malachite de certains pigmenst tendent à intensifier la dégradation de papier. Un récent projet européen commun dénommé INKCor propose l'utilisation de bromures d'amonium tétraalkyles combinés à des éthoxudes de magnésium dans de l'éthanol afin de mieux stabiliser ces composants. Dans l'article suivant l'effet potentiellement stabilisateur d'un autre type d'antioxydants – les bromures imides d'alkyles – est comparé à celui obtenu à l'aide de traitement non aqueux de bromure d'amonium tétrabutyle et lors d'un traitement aqueux à base de phytate de calcium. Les deux nouveaux antioxydants objets de cette étude à savoir: bromure imidazole 1 de méthyle 3 (EMINBr) et bromure imidazole 1 dimithyle 2,3 (BDMINBr) combinés avec l'alcali magnésium éthoxide dans l'éthanol ont effectivement stabilisé l'encre ferro-gallique du papier traité. L'effet de stabilisation obtenu a été meilleur que celui antoxydants déjá connus, comme par exemple les bromures d'amonium tétraalkyles et les deux phytates. On n'y a pas observé d'effets secondaires nocifs sur la couleur de l'encre, ce qui fait de ces deux antioxydants des alternatives intéressantes au traitement aqueux au phytate de calcium couramment employé. On a pousuivi cette étude sur des échantillons de papier présentant une pigmentation due à la corrosion par le vert-de-gris et la malachite. Le traitement le plus efficace a été dans ce cas celui à base de bromures d'amonium tétraalkyles et d'oxyde de magnésium en suspension dans une solution d'éthanol. Bien qu'on n'ait pas observé d'effets négatifs sur le papier contenant de l'encre ferro-gallique ou une pigmentation cuivrée, il reste capital d'étudier les effets de ce traitement sur un certain nombre d'échantillons historiques avant de pouvoir passer à leur utilisation dans la restauration d'objets historiques.
