Between 2004 and 2007 the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) sponsored research dedicated to the development of a treatment method for the conservation of autograph manuscripts corroded by iron gall ink from the estate of Friedrich Carl von Savigny (1779–1861) held at Marburg University Library. The project, directed by conservators, allowed development of a standardized aqueous treatment procedure for manuscripts from the 18th and 19th centuries affected by ink corrosion. The effectiveness of the treatment was unequivocally proven chemically and analytically and changes to the material were assessed by forensic analysis of the writing as well as by instrumental analysis. The evaluation criteria for the description of the treatment quality were formulated from the perspective of the humanities and also with respect to their importance for the scientific treatment of manuscripts. Finally, EDV-supported documentation systems for the precise assessment of damage, as well as methods for the mechanical stabilization of damaged documents within the project's scope were developed and introduced as a model. Zusammenfassung Von 2004 bis 2007 förderte die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) ein Forschungsvorhaben, das der Entwicklung einer Behandlungsmethode zur Restaurierung tintenfraßgeschädigter Autographen aus dem Nachlass Friedrich Carl von Savigny (1779–1861) gewidmet war, der an der Universitätsbibliothek Marburg verwahrt wird. In diesem, unter restauratorischer Leitung durchgeführten Forschungsvorhaben konnte ein standardisiertes, wässriges Verfahren zur Behandlung tintenfraßgeschädigter Autographen des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts entwickelt werden, das detailliert beschrieben wird. Die Wirksamkeit der Behandlung wurde chemisch-analytisch eindeutig bewiesen und Veränderungen am Material durch forensische Schriftanalyse und instrumentelle Untersuchungen erfasst. Bewertungskriterien für die Beschreibung der Behandlungsqualität von Seiten der Geisteswissenschaften und ihre Bedeutung die für wissenschaftliche Bearbeitung von Handschriften wurden formuliert. Schließlich wurden EDV-gestützte Dokumentationssysteme zur präziseren Schadenserfassung, sowie Methoden zur mechanischen Stabilisierung geschädigter Dokumente im Rahmen des Vorhabens als Modelle erarbeitet und vorgestellt. Die Resultate der interdisziplinären Forschungsarbeiten in ihrer Gesamtheit werden in einzelnen Beiträgen dargestellt.   Résumé La Société allemande pour la recherche (DFG) a promu de 2004 à 2007 un projet de recherche qui visait à développer une méthode de traitement susceptible de restaurer des documents autographes émanant de la succession Friedrich Carl von Savigny (1779-1861) conservés dans les archives de la bibliothèque de l'université de Marburg et qui avaient été endommagés par la corrosion des encres. Dans le cadre de ce projet de recherche réalisé sous la direction d'une équipe de restauration il a été possible de mettre au point une méthode de traitement aqueux capable de restaurer des écrits du 18ème et du 19ème Siècles dont les encres avaient été détériorées. Cette méthode sera décrite en détail. L'efficacité du traitement a été clairement démontrée par analyse chimique et les modifications du matériel ont été répertoriées à l'aide de l'analyse légale de l'écriture et d'analyses instrumentales. Des critères d'évaluation relatifs à la description de la qualité du traitement ainsi qu'à son importance pour l'étude de documents manuscrits ont été formulés par des personnalités du monde des lettres. Enfin des systèmes de documentation assistés par des données informatiques capables de répertorier les dégradations de façon plus précise ainsi que des méthodes visant à obtenir une stabilisation mécanique des documents détériorés ont été conçus et présentés dans le cadre de ce projet comme modèles. Les résultats de tous ces différents travaux de recherche interdisciplinaire seront présentés séparément dans des exposés individuels.

The aim of this study was to confirm the stabilizing effect of phytate treatment on iron gall ink degraded cellulose and papers on a molecular level. The impact of iron gall ink degradation on the cellulose molecule and its stabilization can be studied with very low sample amounts by fluorescence labelling of carbonyl groups in combination with GPC-MALLS to determine the weight averaged molecular weight. The aqueous phytate treatment, a complexation of transition metal ions using calcium phytate, and a deacidification treatment using calcium hydrogen carbonate, was applied on Whatman filter paper, and on modern and historic rag paper. Model iron gall inks were plotted on the test papers, while all historic rag papers contained iron gall ink. To gain insight into the long term stability, an ageing step was performed after the phytate treatment, and treated samples were compared to untreated ones. The positive impact of this treatment was verified for the first time on a molecular level, showing that molecular weight and carbonyl group content were significantly stabilized. The stabilization was proven on the inked areas and on pure cellulose. It was also confirmed the even copper containing inks will benefit from the treatment. Zusammenfassung Das Ziel der vorliegenden Untersuchung war der Nachweis einer Stabilisierung von Tintenfraß auf Papier und Cellulose durch die Calciumphytat/ Calciumhydrogencarbonatbehandlung auf molekularer Ebene. Abbauprozesse des Cellulosemoleküls können anhand von sehr geringen Probenmengen mittels Fluoreszenzmarkierung von Carbonylgruppen gefolgt von GPC-MALLS zur Bestimmung der mittleren Molmasse untersucht werden. Die zu untersuchende Behandlung besteht aus einer Kombination von Komplexierung der Übergangsmetallionen mittels Calciumphytat und Entsäuerung durch Calciumhydrogencarbonat im wässrigen Medium. Die Wirksamkeit wurde an Whatman Filter-paper, Modellpapieren und historischen Hadernpapieren getestet. Eine Eisengallusmodelltinte wurde auf die Testpapiere aufgetragen, das historische Hadernpapier war mit Eisengallustinte beschriftet. Um die Langzeitwirkungen untersuchen zu können, wurden die behandelten und unbehandelten Proben einer beschleunigten Alterung unterzogen. Anhand der Fluoreszenzmarkierung und der GPC-Analytik konnte die Wirksamkeit der Behandlung eindeutig nachgewiesen werden, und zwar nicht nur auf dem tintenhaltigen Papier, sondern auch auf dem Papier ohne Tintenauftrag. Es konnte weiterhin gezeigt werden, dass auch kupferhaltige Tinte von der Behandlung profitiert. Résumé L'objectif de cette étude était de démontrer l'effet stabilisateur du traitement au phytate de calcium et à l'hydrocarbonate de calcium sur la dégradation par l'encre ferro-gallique contenue dans le papier et la cellulose à l'échelon moléculaire. Il est possible d'étudier l'impact de la dégradation de la molécule de cellulose ainsi que sa stabilisation à l'aide de très faibles quantités d'échantillons par marquage fluorescent de groupes carbonyles en combinaison avec des GPC-MALLS afin de déterminer les masses moléculaires moyennes en poids. Le traitement aqueux au phytate, une complexation d'ions métal de transition à l'aide de phytate de calcium, et un traitement de désacidification à l'aide d'hydrocarbonate de calcium ont été appliqués à du papier filtre de Whatman et à du papier moderne ainsi qu'à du papier ancien mi-chiffon. Des encres modèles ferro-galliques ont été appliquées sur les échantillons de papier à tester ; le papier ancien mi-chiffon était déjà couvert d'écrits à l'encre ferro-gallique. Les échantillons traités et non traités ont été également soumis au vieillissement artificiel afin de pouvoir comparer les résultats et analyser les effets à long terme du traitement au phytate. L'impact positif de ce traitement a été vérifié pour la première fois au niveau moléculaire mettant en évidence que la masse moléculaire et la teneur du groupe carbonyle étaient stabilisées de façon significative. La stabilisation obtenue par le traitement a été démontrée tant pour les endroits couverts d'encre que sur la cellulose pure. Il a par ailleurs été possible de confirmer que même des encres contenant du cuivre pouvaient tirer profit de ce traitement.

Two expendable manuscript fragments dating 1810–1850 were analysed at the BAM Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing in Berlin using a combination of micro X-ray fluorescence and micro X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy to reveal the influence of aqueous Ca-phytate/Ca-hydrogen carbonate treatment on the chemical composition of iron gall inks. Through the quantification of the content of iron, copper, manganese and zinc in the samples before and after treatment, the analysis provided exemplary information about the alteration in the ink composition experienced by the treatment. It could be demonstrated that, as expected, the archaeometric fingerprint of historical iron gall inks changes considerably because minor and trace components are flushed out. The samples were also tested for the presence of phosphorus and calcium. The distribution of calcium and phosphorus in the treated samples correlates closely with the spatial distribution of the iron gall ink. Zusammenfassung Zur exemplarischen Darstellung von Veränderungen der Tintenzusammensetzungen durch wässrige Behandlungsmethoden sowie der Einlagerung von Phosphor und Calcium aus den Behandlungschemikalien fanden Untersuchungen mittels Röntgenfluoreszenzanalyse (RFA) und Röntgenabsorptionsspektroskopie (XANES) an zwei zeitgenössischen Fragmenten aus den Jahren 1810–1850 an der Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) Berlin statt. Sie wurden vor und nach einer Behandlung mit Calciumphytat-Calciumhydrogencarbonat untersucht. Es erfolgte jeweils eine Quantifizierung von Eisen, Kupfer, Mangan und Zink um Veränderungen durch die Behandlung erkennbar zu machen. Die Proben nach der Behandlung wurden zusätzlich auf Phosphor und Calcium untersucht. Im Ergebnis verändert die Behandlung erwartungsgemäß die chemische Zusammensetzung der Tinten, indem Neben- und Spurenkomponenten ausgewaschen werden. Die Verteilung von Calcium und Phosphor korreliert dabei eng mit der räumlichen Anordnung der Eisengallustinten. Résumé Des analyses ont été réalisées sur deux fragments datant de l'époque qui va entre 1810 et 1850 par l'Institut fédéral allemand (BAM) chargé de la recherche et de l'expertise du matériel de documentation à Berlin afin d'illustrer de façon exemplaire les altérations provoquées dans la composition chimique des encres ferro-galliques par des méthodes de traitement aqueux. Les méthodes utilisées sont l'analyse fluoroscopique aux rayons X (RFA) et la spectroscopie d'absorption aux rayons X (XANES). Ces échantillons ont été examinés avant et après le traitement au phytate de calcium et à l'hydrocarbonate de calcium. A chaque étape on a procédé à une quantification du fer, du cuivre, du manganèse et du zinc afin afin de mettre en évidence les altérations causées par le traitement. Après le traitement les échantillons ont par ailleurs fait l'objet d'une étude relative à leur teneur en phosphore et en calcium. Il a été possible, comme on s'y attendait, de démontrer que le traitement modifie considérablement la composition chimique des encres par le fait que les microcomposants et les composants accessoires sont lessivés. Il apparaît également que la distribution du calcium et du phosphore est en étroite corrélation avec la disposition spatiale des encres ferro-galliques.

The Mannheim Laboratory for Writing and Documents was asked to analyze a selection of handwritten documents with regards to their authenticity characteristics after they underwent calcium phytate/calicum hydrogen carbonate and local stabilization. The question of whether the authentic characteristics of handwriting are possibly altered by different conservation measures was taken up. Especially the dynamic aspects of writing were analyzed according to the methods established for paleography and forensic handwriting analysis since these are of central significance for the identification of handwriting. Zusammenfassung Das Mannheimer Schrift- und Urkundenlabor wurde mit der Untersuchung ausgewählter Handschriften beauftragt, die einer Calciumphytat-Calciumhydrogenkarbonat-Behandlung und einer partiellen Stabilisierung unterzogen wurden. Es sollte vor allem zur Frage Stellung genommen werden, ob die charakteristischen Authentizitätsmerkmale der handschriftlichen Schreibleistungen möglicherweise Beeinträchtigungen aufgrund unterschiedlicher Restaurierungsmaßnahmen ausgesetzt sind. Besonders die dynamischen Aspekte des Schreibens wurden untersucht anhand der in der Paleographie und forensischen Schriftvergleichung etablierten Methoden, da diese für die Identifizierung von Handschriften unabdingbar sind. Resumé Le Laboratoire pour les écrits et documents de Mannheim a été chargé d'analyser une sélection de documents manuscrits en considérant leurs caractéristiques d'authenticité après qu'ils aient été soumis au traitement au phytate de calcium et d'hydrocarbonate de calcium ainsi qu'à une stabilisation partielle. Il devait en particulier donner son avis pour savoir si les caractéristiques distinctives relatives à l'authenticité des documents écrits à la main pouvaient éventuellement être altérées en raison des différentes mesures de conservation. Les aspects dynamiques de l'écriture ont été en particulier analysés selon les méthodes comparatives établies par la paléographie et l'analyse médico-légale de l'écriture manuscrite car celles-ci sont d'un intérêt primordial pour l'identification des documents manuscrits.

The historian is primarily interested in the content of texts. He or she wants to read and understand them. But intrinsic parts of manuscripts are all the features of, and the traces on the paper, as well as the phases of its development, annotations of the agency or notes in private bequests. And, ultimately, a fake can only be made out with the original in hand, and only the original has the aura of authenticity. Editions and digital copies will often make a viewing of the original redundant, but they cannot replace it in all its functions. Zusammenfassung Der Historiker ist zunächst einmal an dem Inhalt der Texte interessiert. Er will sie lesen und verstehen. Zum Schriftstück gehören aber auch alle Bearbeitungsspuren auf dem Papier, wie Entstehungsstufen des Textes, Geschäftsvermerke der Behörde oder Notizen in privaten Nachlässen. Letztlich läßt sich nur am Original beurteilen, ob eine Fälschung vorliegt, und nur das Original vermittelt die Aura des Authentischen. Editionen oder Digitalisierungen machen den Rückgriff auf das Original in vielen Fällen entbehrlich, können es aber nie in allen Funktionen ersetzen.einmal an dem Inhalt Résumé L'historien est tout d'abord intéressé par le contenu des textes. Et au bout du compte il n'est possible de juger qu'il s'agit d'un faux que lorsqu'on peut le comparer à l'original. Seul l'original dégage l'aura de l'authenticité. Certaines éditions ou copies numériques dispensent dans un grand nombre de cas de recourir à l'original mais elles ne peuvent jamais le remplacer dans toutes ses fonctions.

For the aqueous treatment of iron gall ink corrosion using calcium phytate and calcium hydrogen carbonate, a standardized work procedure is presented suitable for single page treatment. This standardized procedure was developed specifically for the stabilization of autograph manuscripts from the Savigny estate, that is, for German handwritten documents, letters and manuscripts from the 18th and 19th centuries. The work process involves eleven steps, of which three concern the preliminary examination and eight the actual treatment itself. The requisite materials for the implementation of this procedure, as well as for its step-by-step execution, are compiled in a systematic description for the conservation practice. The eleven steps consist of: the visual characterization of the ink (1), the testing for the iron ions (2), the test of the wettability of the object in question (3); if it is decided to pursue treatment: humidification (4), wetting (5), washing (6), the binding of free iron ions with a calcium phytate solution (7), the introduction of an alkaline buffer by means of calcium hydrogen carbonate (8), the strengthening and mechanical stabilization via a treatment using a dilute gelatin solution (9), transfer to a drying stack (10) and finally the drying of the objects under light weight (11). Individual parameters, such as the time interval between humidification and wetting, as well as the creation of a slight suction during double-screen washing can be adapted to the material properties and the condition of the objects without compromising the effectiveness of the treatment. The application of this treatment takes into account the specific material properties of for ink-corroded documents. For this reason, there is always a preliminary decision to be made, in cooperation with those responsible for the collection, either for or against an aqueous treatment. The risk that remains after such deliberation in case of an aqueous treatment is to be assessed and clearly demonstrated prior to treatment via a standardized preliminary evaluation. Zusammenfassung Für die objektschonende Anwendung einer wässrigen Tintenfraßbehandlung mittels Calciumphytat und Calciumhydrogencarbonat und der anschließenden mechanischen Stabilisierung von bereits geschwächtem Schriftgut auf Papier wird ein standardisierter Arbeitssablauf für eine Einzelblattbearbeitung dargestellt. Dieser Arbeitsstandard wurde gezielt für die Stabilisierung von Autographen des Savigny-Nachlasses, d. h. für deutsche Handschriften des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts, entwickelt. Der Arbeitsablauf wird hierfür in 11 Schritte zerlegt, von denen 4 die Voruntersuchung und 8 die Behandlung betreffen. Die für die Durchführung der Schritte jeweils erforderliche Abfolge von Maßnahmen werden in Tabellen zusammengestellt. Die 11 Schritte umfassen: visuelle Charakterisierung der Tinte (1), Test auf ungebundene Eisen-Ionen (2), Test der Benetzbarkeit des Objects (3), im Fall der Behandlung dann Befeuchtung (4), Benetzung (5) Wässerung (6), Komplexierung der ungebundenen Eisenionen mit einer Calciumphytatlösung (7), Einbringen einer alkalischen Reserve mittels Calciumhydrogencarbonat (8), Festigung und mechanische Stabilisierung durch Behandlung mit einer verdünnten Gelatinelösung (9), Transfer in eine Trockungssituation (10), sowie die abschließende spannungsfreie Trocknung der Objekte (11). Einzelne Parameter, wie Zeitintervalle oder Wahl der Hilfsmaterialien können an die jeweiligen Materialeigenschaften und den Erhaltungszustand von Handschriften angepasst werden, ohne dass sich die Effektivität der Behandlung verändert. Das verbleibende Restrisiko der wässrigen Tintenfraßbehandlung wird im Vorfeld der Behandlung durch die ebenfalls standardisierte Vorunter suchung aufgezeigt und bewertet. Résumé Une procédure standardisée de travail qui convient au traitement du papier page par page a été présentée pour le traitement aqueux de la corrosion de l'encre ferro-gallique en utilisant du phytate de calcium et de l'hydrocarbonate de calcium. Cette procédure standardisée a été spécialement mise au point pour la stabilisation des manuscrits autographes provenant de la succession Savigny, c'est-à-dire des documents écrits en allemand, lettres et manuscrits datant des 18ème et 19ème Siècles. La procédure de travail comporte onze phases, dont trois d'entre elles se rapportent à l'examen préliminaire et les huit autres au traitement proprement dit. Les documents et les mesures nécessaires à l'implémentation de la procédure ainsi qu'à son exécution phase par phase ont été classés dans des tableaux donnant une description systématique utile pour la conservation. Les onze phases sont les suivantes: caractérisation visuelle de l'encre (1), test sur les ions de fer (2), test sur la mouillabilité de l'objet en question (3); en cas de poursuite du traitement: humidification (4), trempage (5), lavage (6), fixation des ions libres de fer avec une solution de phytate de calcium (7), introduction d'une réserve alcaline grâce à l'hydrocarbonate de calcium (8), consolidaton et stabilisation mécanique par traitement avec une solution de gélatine diluée (9), transfert dans un local de séchage (10), et puis séchage final des objets exempt de tension. Certains paramètres, comme les intervalles de temps par exemple entre l'humidification et le trempage ou le choix de détails accessoires, peuvent être adaptés aux propriétés du matériel et à l'état de conservation des documents manuscrits sans que ceci ne compromette l'efficacité du traitement. L'application de ce traitement peut avoir des conséquences sur les propriétés spécifiques du matériel. C'est pourquoi un examen préliminaire des documents contenant de l'encre ferro-gallique corrodée doit toujours avoir lieu et la décision ne doit être prise qu'en coopération avec les personnes responsables de la collection. Après une telle délibération le risque résiduel que présente un tel traitement aqueux doit être évalué et clairement démontré.
