Experimental details

In a typical synthesis 0.05 g ZnSO4 and 0.05 g oxalic acid were dissolved 5 mL water at constant stirring, while the pH value was adjust to 9 by NaOH. Finally, the mixture was kept in a 30 ml Teflon – lined steel autoclave at 443 K for 5 days. The autoclave was slowly cooled to room temperature. Colorless prismatic crystals of the title compound were obtained.

Discussion

Coordination polymers (CPs) has gained great recognition as an important interface between synthetic chemistry and material science not only because of their fascinating topology and intriguing architectures, but also due to their potential applications in magnetism, luminescence, ion exchange, electronic apparatus, catalysis [1–4]. The most effective and facile approach for constructing new CPs is the judicious choice of various organic linkers, such as oxalate: Mn(C2O4)Mn3(PO4)2(H2O)2 [5], Na2Co2(C2O4)3(H2O)2 [6], and C14H16CuN2O8 [7].

Single-crystal X-ray diffraction study reveals that title compound features three-dimensional (3D) structure constructed of deprotonated (COO)22− anions, Na+ cations, Zn2+ cations and coordinated water molecules. Each Na+ cation is coordinated by seven O atoms from four dianionic oxalato ligands and one aqua ligand with the Na–O bond distance ranging from 2.305(4) to 2.728(5) Å. Each Zn2+ cation is surrounded by six O atoms from three oxalato and one aqua ligand (see the figure) forming a distorted ZnO6 octahedron with the Zn–O bond distance ranging from 2.043(4) to 2.189(4) Å. There are two crystallographic independent oxalate anions. The asymmetric unit is shown as ellipsoids (50% probability) in the figure. One oxalate anion is located around an inversion center (O1–C6) the other one is found in a general position (O3–O6). The first one connects two Zn2+ cations and two Na+ cations, the other one coordinates two Zn2+ cations and three Na+ cations. In addition, the water is coordinated to one Zn2+ cation and one Na+ cation.
