Abstract

C18H16N2O, Monoclinic, P21/c, a = 12.1735(3) Å, b = 7.36483(18) Å, c = 16.1137(4) Å, β = 103.028(2)°, V = 1407.50(6) Å3, Z = 4, Rgt(F) = 0.0387, wRref(F2) = 0.1087, T = 291.15 K.

Source of material

The title compound was obtained from the reaction of naphthalene-1,8-diamine and 4-methoxybenzaldehyde as described in literature [1] and recrystallized from a dichloromethane/petroleum ether solution at room temperature to give the desired crystals suitable for single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Experimental details

All hydrogen atoms were added using the corresponding AFIX options of the SHELX system [12].

Discussion

Perimidines (peri-naphtho-fused pyrimidine systems) are of interest because they constitute an important class of natural products, which exhibit useful biological activities [2, 3]. Moreover, perimidines have wide utility as synthons for formation of squarylium dyes [4] and ligands for the preparation of N-heterocyclic carbenes [5, 6]. So, some groups now are interested in the synthesis of perimidine ring [7, 8]. Some perimidine derivatives can be prepared from naphthalene-1,8-diamine and carbonyl compounds [9, 10]. For example, naphthalene-1,8-diamine was reacted with 4-methoxybenzaldehyde to give product 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,3-dihydro-1H-perimidine.

A view of the molecular structure of the title compound is given in the figure. The six-membered pyrimidine ring are not coplanar with a dihedral angle of 130.5°, which is similar to those of related perimidine derivatives [11]. The benzene ring plane is almost perpendicular to the naphthalene ring plane (dihedral angles of 93.2°). In the crystal there exist intermolecular NH⋯O hydrogen bonds (O⋯H = 2.24 Å) and π−π interaction with a ca. 3.77 Å face-face separation between the adjacent benzene rings, which construct a dimeric structure.
