Source of material

A mixture of 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe, 0.2 mmol, 36.4 mg), 4-methylphthalic acid (H2 mph, 0.2 mmol, 36.0 mg), Co(NO3)2·6H2O (0.1 mmol, 58.2 mg), NaOH (0.1 mmol, 4.0 mg) and H2O (12 mL) was placed in a 25 mL Teflon-lined stainless steel vessel, heated to 403 K for 3 d, and then cooled slowly to room temperature. Red block-shaped crystals of the title compound suitable for X-ray analysis were obtained.

Discussion

Co(II)-based coordination polymers (Co-CPs) with multicarboxylate ligands are of contemporary interest because of their structural topologies and potential applications in the areas of catalysis, gas adsorption/separation and magnetism [1–4]. Phthalic acid (benzene-1,2-dicarboxylic acid) and its derivatives have been widely utilized to construct coordination polymers [5–8]. In the other hand, rod-like N,N′-donor ligands, such as 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethene (bpe), are widely employed to construct coordination polymers [9, 10]. Herein, we report a new three-dimensional Co(II) supramolecular coordination polymeric network constructed by 4-methylphthalate (mph) and bpe. There is one Co(II) ion, one mph2−, one bpe and two coordinated water molecules as well as three free water molecules in the asymmetric unit. The Co1 is six-coordinated with a distorted octahedral geometry by two trans N atoms from two bpe, two water molecules and two carboxylato-O atoms from two different carboxylate groups of the same mph2− (Figure top). The Co(II) ions are joined by bpe to form a 1-D chain (Figure lower part). The 1-D chains are further linked by hydrogen bonding O(6)—H(4W)⋯O(4)′ and O(5)—H(2W)⋯O(3)′ (Symmetry code: ′ = −x + 1/2, y, z+1/2, d(O⋯O) = 2.702(6) and 2.791(5) Å) to form a 3-D supramolecular architecture.
