Focus on NLENG 2023 Volume 12 Issue 1

The aim of the contribution is to give a concise but complete view of the Volume to remark to the readers the main features of the Issue. The Volume includes 48 regular papers and 1 Rapid Communication, moreover 22 papers related to the Special Issue Recent trends and Emergence of Technology in Non-linear Engineering and its Application part II, 11 papers referred to the Special Issue Reliable and Robust Fuzzy Logic Control System for Industry 4.0, 7 papers of the Special Issue Dynamic Engineering and Control Methods for Nonlinear Systems are also included. The classification of paper types is reported in Figure 1.

The initial comments are referred to the Special Issues. It is remarked that even if the emergent behavior of nonlinear dynamics is a key point topic of the Nonlinear Science in the first cited Special Issue, the topic of Emergence of Technology has been assumed as an impressive aspect in more areas. Therefore, the authors’ efforts had been to make complex system engineering a common platform in their application. Accordingly, the added value of nonlinear systems has been widely remarked in the areas of Robotics, Nonlinear Mechanics, Big Data and Neural Engineering. The various topics give an idea of how innovative technologies in various areas could be integrated together to give innovative systems.
The second Special Issue considered in our discussion is related to the practical and timely application of Fuzzy Logic paradigms to face the problem of Industry 4.0 program. The efforts of the authors had been on this topic even if often other technologies offer a better impact in the actual platform of Industry 4.0.
The third Special Issue focuses on the area of automatic control technologies and applications taking into account how nonlinearities could play a positive role in the projects. The issue is part II of a Special Issue previously published in the journal and both open a further relevant area to the journal regarding the automation in the context of Nonlinear Engineering.
Now some general considerations will be reported to as the various topics regarding the body of the 49 general papers.
There were 15 papers with specific methodological trends. Moreover, the theory is well conceived in the perspectives of nonlinear engineering.
What is impressive is the interest of more authors in developing new strategies based on non-integer and fractional calculus both in modeling and in numerical solving distributed nonlinear systems. It is also important to remark the interest and the success in numerical areas of using spline methods. Indeed, the topics of more classical undiscovered aspects in the telegraph equations, in Gordon equations in Burgers and KdV equations appear as relevant contribution to the Issue. Moreover, more papers present innovative results in the area of optimization both with reference to global optimization algorithms based on swarm approach and in proposing advanced new formulation in non-convex variational optimization.
The number of relevant papers where specific applications strongly emerge is 35. The papers are essentially clustered (Figure 2) as follows:

Control Engineering: 6
Small-Size Engineering (Nanofluidics and Biochemical Engineering): 5
Systems Engineering: 7

Clusterization of papers devoted to specific applications.
It is necessary to note that more papers are considered interdisciplinary among the considered areas.
Moreover, it must be stated that the papers that in our classification have been considered with more methodological aspects include results that are of strong interest in Nonlinear Engineering.
The contributions clustered in the area of Small-size engineering are evaluated as having great interest for the readers. The contributions are essentially multidisciplinary and give interesting new perspective to the journal.
Some notes about the authors’ countries. The papers include authors of the following countries: China, India, Pakistan Egypt, Iran, Ukraine, South Africa, USA, Italy, Jordania, Thailand, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Brazil, and Kazakhstan.
It is interesting to note the journal’s impact and relevancy in the world. Moreover, appropriate efforts must be done to involve possible authors from Europe and Australia.
A concise view of the papers’ topics of the previous issue of the year 2022 leads to the following analysis. The regular papers made up 34 items in the issue and 37 contributions belong to the Special Issue “Recent trends and Emergence of Technology in Nonlinear Engineering and its Application, Part I.” Regarding the regular papers the following subject are prominent: ten papers are addressed to methodological contributions for nonlinear engineering. Other ten papers are related to specific applications, with more of them regarding physical thermal processes, optical applications and fluidodynamics. The other ten papers regard nonlinear engineering problems with specific topic in the field of materials and mechanical engineering. Four papers deal with specific information science problems including image processing.
Naturally, the specific papers of the Special Issue regard themes on the subjects that are also developed in the current Special Issue.
A further consideration regards the specific trend of the regular issue with respect to the previous ones: an increased number of papers regarding Automatic Control and Complex System Engineering, moreover the current Issue does appear more coherent to the aim of the journal as compared to the previous one.
The trend of the number of items published from Volume 1 to Volume 12 is reported in Figure 3. The inclusion of Special Issues in the recent years contributed at increasing the number of papers.

The nonlinear electronic engineering topic could be a further perspective innovative subject of the future issues. This aspect may be linked to un-modeled dynamics in integrated devices [1] or to novel electronic devices, such as memristors. These devices, in fact, are two terminal components that merge a dynamics, i.e. they are memory elements, and a nonlinearity [2]. This peculiarity makes memristors paradigmatic in nonlinear electronic engineering. Moreover, quantum mechanics and quantum electronics [3] can be topics of strong interest for the journal, as well as nonlinear dynamics in neuroengineering [4,5].
The project is to focus new areas but confirming the essential lines of focus of the journal.
The authors must be stimulated to present papers regarding educational topics in nonlinear engineering and to focus a platform dedicated to exchanging knowledge in this area.
Looking globally at all the published papers it appears that the journal presents a modern point of view of Nonlinear Engineering and could offer, especially to the young generation, new perspectives and develop new innovative ideas for the next future.
