Source of material

The reagents and solvents used are commercially available. The title compound was synthesized according to literature procedures [1, 2] using N,N′-ditoluenesulfonyl-1,4-butanediamine [3] (0.05 mol) and 1,4-dibromobutane (0.055 mol) in DMF. The pure title compound was obtained by column chromatography on silica gel with dichloromethane/methanol = 99:1 (v/v) as an eluent. Crystals suitable for X-ray diffraction were obtained from trichloromethane/methanol = 1:1 (v/v) at room temperature. m.p.: 580–581 K.

Experimental details

The structure was solved by direct methods and refined using the SHELXL software [4]. All of the hydrogen atoms were placed in the calculated positions.

Discussion

The mesocyclic diamines such as 1,4-diazacycloheptane, 1,5-diazacyclooctane have been a source of considerable interest in the past few decades, because of their favourable ability to bind various metal ions [57]. The synthesis of this compound and its derivatives are normally carried out by the reaction of a,w ditosylamides with either a,w-ditosylates or a,w dihalides. The title crystal structure is built by C22H30N2O4S2 molecules. Within the crystal structure, all bond lengths and angles are in normal ranges. The S1—O1, S1—O2, S1—N1 and S1—C5 bond lengths are 1.4326(19), 1.427(2), 1.617(2) and 1.773(2) Å, respectively. The asymmetric unit is composed of one half of a molecule. In the crystal structure, the 1,6-diazecane-1,6-diyl moiety is folded up into a stable “boat-chair” conformation, which is consistent with other mesocyclic diamine derivatives and its metal complexes [8, 9].
