About this journal
Starting 2025, Historische Zeitschrift will be transferred to Gold Open Access on a year-by-year basis. All articles will thus immediately appear under the Creative Commons license CC-BY-NC-ND (authors retain rights). There will be no publication costs for the authors. The Open Access transformation is based on Subscribe-to-Open, an alternative model that enables the full Open Access transformation of journals through the continuation of existing subscriptions. The prerequisite for successful transformation is that subscriptions are continued to the same extent as before. The editors of Historische Zeitschrift and the publisher De Gruyter would therefore like to thank all subscribers for their support, which has made the transformation to Open Access possible.
Founded in 1859 by Heinrich von Sybel. Continued by Friedrich Meinecke and Theodor Schieder.
Editors-in-chief: Andreas Fahrmeir and Julia Hillner
Co-Editors: Arndt Brendecke, Sabine Dabringhaus, Dominik Geppert, Birthe Kundrus, Christina Morina, Werner Plumpe, Susanne Rau, Frank Rexroth, Karl Ubl and Uwe Walter.
Former EiC: Lothar Gall.
The Historische Zeitschrift (HZ) stands for excellent German-language historical scholarship. The essay section deals with aspects from all areas of history; there is no regional or epochal focus. A detailed books review section, reviews article on current trends and debates and a list of publications submitted for review keep readers up to date with the latest developments in German and international historical research. The journal offers both established historians and outstanding young academics the widest possible dissemination of their research findings. Submitted articles undergo a single blind peer review process by at least two editors and external reviewers.

Historische Zeitschrift is open to contributions in German from the entire spectrum of history that deal with a broad topic at a high analytical level and in an innovative manner. We expressly welcome contributions from researchers in an early career phase, especially at postdoctoral level. We expect contributions not to be submitted to other journals at the same time. Submissions may be checked for plagiarism.
The review process consists of three stages: In a first step, the editors in chief check whether the article fulfils general scientific requirements and fits the scope of the journal. If this is the case, they pick two reviewers for the peer review. On the basis of the reviews, the EiCs decide on acceptance, rejection and revision with or without a new review; other members of the editorial board might be asked for further reviews. The reviewers' comments are submitted anonymously. In addition to high scientific quality, an appropriate linguistic level is also expected. Foreign-language articles can be reviewed, but the authors must provide the German translation if the article is accepted.
Only very few articles are accepted without revisions. Approximately one in three submitted articles will be published.
Please submit articles as a PDF file by e-mail to:
Prof. Dr. Andreas Fahrmeir / Prof. Dr. Julia Hillner
E-mail: fahrmeir@em.uni-frankfurt.de
E-mail: jhillner@uni-bonn.de
Research articles should not exceed 80,000 characters (including spaces). Please include an abstract in German and English of 1000-1500 characters (including spaces). Make sure that your abstract reflects the content of your contribution in a concise manner, that your theses and methods are recognizable and that the abstract also contains the results of the article. Please also add 3-5 not too specific keywords (in German and English) to improve your article’s discoverability. You can find the guidelines for the formal design in Instructions for Authors.
Notes for reviewers of the ‘Historische Zeitschrift’
Submission
Reviews are submitted via the submission system of Historische Zeitschrift, where reviewers can post their texts themselves. Please refrain from submitting reviews by post or e-mail. Before submission, reviewers must register and activate their user account. You will find instructions on how to do this on the website.
Review text
The submission system contains the text of the review; the title, name and place of work or residence of the author are generated by the system itself. Authors can generate and print out a complete PDF version of the review text under ‘Druck-Vorschau. Verbatim quotations (also from Latin sources) from the book under review are always set in normal font (not in italics) and in inverted commas, with a page reference ‘(p. 154f.)’ in brackets. Italics should only be used for short foreign-language terms, emphasis and the names of contributors in reviewed anthologies.
Spelling
Historische Zeitschrift and its supplements use the new spelling rules according to the ‘Duden’ guidelines. We request that contributions be written in this orthographic form.
References in the review section
There are no footnotes in the review section. Only short references can be inserted into the text in brackets. They should be limited to the bare essentials.
