This study enquires into the possibilities and limits of political decision making in Sparta. Using various examples, it shows that the Spartans tried to avoid processes of communal decision making and, therefore, tended to delay political decisions or to avoid them altogether. If that was not possible, they liked to argue on a non-political plane and hence decided on the basis of off-topic considerations. To explain this characteristic element of Spartan politics, the features of the most important Spartan institutions (mainly the double kingship and the Ephorate) are referred to. Evidently, not one of these constitutional bodies had been brought into life or designed with the question in mind whether and how it would be conducive to the ordered political decision making in the communal sphere. It conforms with these findings that the question how the different state institutions should interact remained unsolved till the end of Spartan history. The stability of the Spartan state, which was admired even in antiquity, seems to be, from this point of view, the result of agony rather than the result of deliberate conservatism.

The paper argues that the 17th century marks the beginning of the new perception of nature in Western and Central Europe, although the transitional phase has to be considered somewhat broader, from 1580–1730. A broad methodical approach is used, combining new results of the history of ideas and art history with technological and economic changes in dealing with nature. Part I deals with traditional academic positions which see the beginning of the modern perception of nature in the Italian Renaissance (14th/15th centuries), in the “Scientific Revolution” of the 17th century or in the Romanticism of the late 18th century. Part II tries to prove that decisive shifts of the perception of nature and landscape in semantics, academics, engineering, and art took place as early as 1600. Part III explains further development in the second half of the 17th and the first three decades of the 18th centuries, which was especially influenced by the appearance of Physical Theology and the aesthetic category of the sublime”. Part IV gives a cursory prospect of the most important changes during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Since the eighteenth century theatre and opera were in centre of cultural self-representation in Italy. This article examines societal and political conflicts around Italy's municipal theatres after Unification, based on the example of Bologna, the former capital of the Papal Legations in the lands of St. Peter. The article starts from the analysis of local reactions to the operas of Giuseppe Verdi. Initially, many of his works were not well received in Italy and occasionally they were even rejected on patriotic grounds. Other conflicts also characterised Italy's opera houses after Unification. As a consequence of the changing repertoire and the crisis of municipal finance many Italian theatres had to abolish the ballet during the intervals and after the performance of opera seria. Increasingly, the theatres lost their function as the backdrop for the self-representation of the urban patricians. Instead, for Italy's municipalities they became an important instrument of cultural policy, for the representation of cultural status and political values. Although they were not necessarily opposed to the idea of the liberal nation state, the aristocracy in the theatres' private boxes opposed the societal change affecting „their” old theatres. Their reaction to the changing repertoire and to the transformation of public theatres after Unification poses the question to what extent Italy had become a liberal civil society or if it is perhaps appropriate to analyse this case as an example for the „Persistence of the Old Régime” in the sense of Arno Mayer's influential thesis.
