Ernst H. Kantorowicz′s scholarship had profound political implications in both Germany and the United States. Drawing on Nietzsche′s anthropology and Stefan George′s political poetry, the medievalist′s seminal biography of the emperor Frederick II. ignited heated methodological debate at the 13th Conference of German Historians in Halle (1930). The widely distributed text about the Hohenstaufen emperor particularly attracted the attention of German national romantics, including political extremists. In essence, however, the book was intended to serve as a biographical model for members of the George-Kreis. The Stauffenberg brothers were Kantorowicz′s scholarly advisors. This collaboration was disrupted by the war and by conflicts over interpretation of Stefan George′s ideals, but in 1947 Alexander v. Stauffenberg resumed contact with EKA, sending him poetry and pursuing their common interest in the history of Ancient Greece. Following his refusal to meet Berkeley′s requirement that he sign an anti-communist Loyalty Oath, Kantorowicz was invited by J. Robert Oppenheimer to join the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton where he collaborated with George F. Kennan. At the Institute for Advanced Study, the exile also wrote his English opus magnum The King′s two Bodies, in which he develops an interpretation of Dante′s humana universitas as an elitist, yet pluralistic community of global citizens. In Princeton, Kantorowicz′ academic and political networks comprised of left-wing American Democrats alongside traditional followers of Stefan George.
