Source of material
The mixture of Ni(OAc)2. 4H2O (0.050 g, 0.2 mmol) and H3minca (2-(hydroxyl)-6-methyl-isonicotinic acid, 0.039 g, 0.2 mmol) is mixed with an aqueous solution (10 mL) of 4,4′-bipyridine (0.2 mmol, 0.032 g). After stirring for 20 min in air, the pH value was adjusted to 4.5, and the mixture was placed into 25 mL Teflon-lined autoclave under autogenous pressure being heated at 145 °C for 72 h, then the autoclave was cooled over a period of 24 h at a rate 5 °C/h. The blue crystals of title complex were obtained. Yield: 0.0362 g (39%) based on nickel. Elemental analysis (%): calcd. for C26H42N4NiO15: C, 44.02; H, 5.97; N, 7.90; found: C, 44.32; H, 5.71; N, 7.64. IR (KBr pellet, cm−1): 3445 s, 3177 br, 2930 s, 2038 s, 1704 vs, 1639 s, 1379 s, 1091 m, 918 s, 791 s, 770 m, 662 s, 607 s, 472 m.
Experimental details
The nitrogen and oxygen-bound hydrogen atoms were located from the difference Fourier syntheses and refined with restrained distances usind the DFIX comand (O—H: 0.84(1) Å; N—H: 0.88(1) Å; H—H: 1.37(1) Å). The O5 atom from the uncoordinated water is disorded (0.5:0.5), and the hydrogen atoms cannot be added appropriately. The carbon bonded hydrogen atoms were placed on calculated positions using a riding model (AFIX 43 or AFIX 137 option of the SHELX program [9].
Discussion
It is well known that the nitrogen heterocycles and aromatic multi carboxylic acids are very important building blocks of many important compounds widely used in medicine, agriculture, industry, and coordination chemistry [1, 2]. They have been intensively employed to provide a great variety of topological architectures [3, 4] due to their remarkable versatile coordination modes as well as the noncovalent bond, and the catalysis, electrical properties depend heavily on intermolecular interactions. Meanwhile, a variety of multi-carboxylate pyridimine/imidazoline/pyridine-based ligands have been extensively employed for exhibiting various coordination fashions [5, 6]. The crystal structure of the title compound reveals that the asymmetric unit consists of three segments, a half of a Ni(II) cation with two coordinated water molecules coordinating a half of a 4,4′-ethene-1,2-diyldipyridine moiety (44EBP), a counter anion of one deprotonated Hminca molecule, keeping the charge balance, and free water molecules. Unfortunately, Hminca does not coordinate to the metal ion, even if both the carboxylic and hydroxyl groups have been deprotonated. The central Ni(II) ion adopts a six-fold coordination mode, showing a slightly distorted octahedral configuration of [NiN2O4] set, among which four oxygen atoms from four water molecules, and two nitrogen atoms. The bond lengths of Ni(1)—O(1W)#1, Ni(1)—O(2W) are just 2.0552(14) and 2.0552(15) Å, while both bond lengths of Ni(1)—N(2)#1 and Ni(1)—N(2) are 2.1408(16) Å. The dihedral angle between the pyridyl rings is 0.8°, which means that the molecule is almost planar. Caused by symmetry interestingly, the dihedral angle between the pyridyl ring 44EBP and the benzene ring of the H2minca molecule is almost 0°.
The minca anion, is connected with the aforementioned coordination polymer by hydrogen bonds O(1W)—H(11)⋯O(1), [O(1W)—O(1)) = 2.725(2) Å, O(1W)—H(11)⋯O(1) = 170(3)°]. This hydrogen bond involves the coordinated water and an oxygen atom from a carboxylate group of minca. At the same time, the [Ni(H2O)4(4,4′-bipy)2] units rise to an one-dimensional chain. The coordiantion mode of the title complex is comparable to that of Zn(II)-4,4′-bipyridine coordination polymer, [Zn2(OAC)4(4,4′-bipy)2]n [7], in which there are no water molecules in the sphere of the central metal ion and the oxygen atoms are from a carboxylato ligand.
Close inspection reveals that there exists strong hydrogen bond interactions between the oxygen atoms of the carboxylate groups and free water, which are: O(1W)—O(3W) = 2.714(2) Å, O(1W)—H(12)⋯O(3W) = 175(3)°, O(2W)—O(1)#4 = 2.748(2) Å, O(2W)—H(21)⋯O(1)#4 = 169(2)°, O(2W)—O(4W)#5 = 2.746(2) Å, O(2W)—H(22)⋯O(4W)#5 = 172(2)°, O(3W)—O(2)#6 = 2.807(3) Å, O(3W)—H(31)⋯O(2)#6 = 162(3)°.
