Marian hymns and sequences occupy a central place in the history of sacred song. Alongside Latin poetry, starting from the early Middle Ages, there were also vernacular translations, which adapted, modified, and transformed the image of Mary from their original models. The conference volume assembles a broad range of interdisciplinary papers that examine these processes of reformulation and appropriation.

Er wirft erste Schlaglichter auf das Verhältnis von Vorlage und Bearbeitung, auf die Vielgestaltigkeit und mitunter auch Artifizialität der Texte sowie zugleich – ebenso fundamental – auf deren pragmatische Einbindung. Für weitere Forschungen stellt er nicht zuletzt umfassendes Textmaterial (in Form von Neu- und Ersteditionen sowie diplomatischen Abschriften) bereit. Im Gesamten liegt hiermit ein überaus gelungener Tagungsband und würdiger Auftakt einer vielversprechenden Reihe vor."
