21 Heritage-Related Multilingualism and Foreign Language Learning

Abstract
The acquisition of heritage-related multilingualism is subject to rather difficult sociolinguistic conditions. Moreover, being (allochthonous) minority languages heritage languages are usually marginalised in the school and education system and heritage multilingualism is sometimes devalued compared to institutional multilingualism. Heritage-related multilinguals may thus vary in competence and language attitudes from other multilingual foreign language learners and advantages of multilingualism may be different. Against this backdrop, the present chapter will first classify the specifics of heritage- related multilingualism in contrast to foreign language learners; in line with a holistic view, cognitive and sociolinguistic aspects are considered together. The following section will outline the current perspectives and lines of research, with a special focus on the handling of heritage-related multilingualism in the foreign language classroom. On this basis, application-oriented perspectives will be addressed using the example of French as a foreign language.
