Abstract

The contribution offers an outlook on the sociolinguistic concepts of language ideologies and attitudes as central tools for investigating metalinguistic representations and practices. The first section, dedicated to the theoretical and methodological foundations, is followed by a historical overview of the main intellectual traditions: the Marxist-influenced fields of Philosophy of Ideology, Philosophy and Sociology of Language, Discourse Linguistics and Linguistic Anthropology in the case of language ideologies and Sociolinguistics and Variationist Linguistics in the case of language attitudes. The state of research and the main methodological procedures are also provided. The author argues that research on language ideologies concerning Romance languages starts in the Sociolinguistics of Catalan and Occitan in the 1960s and that language attitudes and ideologies are accounted for in the investigation of naive linguistic conscience in the Soviet Sociolinguistics of the 1920s. The final section discusses the state of research on language attitudes and ideologies in regard to Romance- speaking countries with an emphasis on studies on and from hispanophone areas.
