Abstract
This contribution provides an overview of the key concepts modern (Socio-) Linguistics is drawing on to study the dynamics of language variation and change under the conditions of mobility and migration. First, the major characteristics of modern mobility and its implications for linguistic research are outlined. After providing an overview of the increasingly dynamic trajectories and heterogeneous composition of migrant groups, the shift from quantitative to more qualitative research in (Socio-)Linguistics is discussed. The most prominent key concepts of contemporary Sociolinguistics are outlined, after which some of the central areas of current research regarding language and mobility in Romance Linguistics are introduced. Finally, a summary including an outlook of open questions and fields requiring more future research is provided.
