Abstract

Languages and (multilingual) communication are essential in today’s interconnected societies, where plurilingual und pluricultural competences are fundamental for lifelong learning and active participation. However, language-related topics often elicit discussion at both societal and individual levels. These debates reveal persistent stereotypes and misconceptions about languages, language diversity, and language- related questions in education. Applied Linguistics can play an important role here, by both disseminating research findings and engaging with societal language questions. In this sense, this chapter discusses examples of good practices that show how plurilingual learning and teaching can be implemented in educational systems and language-related topics can be appropriately communicated also to audiences beyond the academic sphere. This knowledge transfer, combining theory and practice, contributes to a more inclusive and informed approach to languages and language education and fosters multi- and plurilingualism. In sum, the chapter argues that Applied Linguistics can help address the language-related challenges of today’s societies.
