20 Foreign Language Learning and Age
-
Christina Reissner
Abstract
Applied Linguistics deals with the highly complex topic of language(s) and communication in the broadest sense, bringing together findings from a wide range of disciplines. In a world characterised by international mobility and networking, the ability to communicate in various languages is a key competence. A variety of factors influence language acquisition and processing as well as performance; they are examined from different disciplines’ perspectives such as (Neuro)Biology, Psychology, Sociolinguistics, cognitive research and language teaching/learning research. As language skills and language knowledge develop in a highly dynamic way over an individual’s lifetime, the age factor is of great interest for all of these contexts. This chapter combines insights from different research fields to illustrate the transversal importance of age-related aspects of linguistic development and language processing and, consequently, for language teaching and learning.
