Abstract

This chapter deals with some implications of the increasing digitisation in foreign language learning. The often-invoked media society has apparently become a reality as the vast majority of young people are equipped with smartphones nowadays. Given the possibilities offered by smartphones in combination with the Internet, an increasingly wide range of media are also available for foreign language learning. The first section of this article serves to define basic terms and discuss the required digital literacies of teachers, followed by an overview of the development from computer- assisted language learning to multimedia learning environments. The second section looks at research findings on the topic, while the third one focuses on the applications of multimedia language learning. The last section explores the question of how foreign language learning will develop in the future in light of the rapid digitisation of our societies.
