2 Methods of Empirical Social Research for Applied Romance Studies
-
Martina Schrader-Kniffki
Abstract
This chapter gives an overview of qualitative methodological approaches in empirical social research. The two possibilities of collecting natural data and collecting controlled data are distinguished and presented separately. For both areas, aspects such as field access, data collection and aspects of data analysis are discussed. Reference is made to problems that may arise and to the relevant literature. After overview-like presentations, the article focuses on studies from the Spanish-speaking context. In the area of natural data, these are centred, for example, on intercultural communication situations, which can also include court hearings. The collection and analysis of controlled data within interviews is discussed with a focus on systematically conducted interpretative analysis procedures. These can include the use of adequate software. Finally, there is an outlook on multimodal methodological approaches that can work with both conversation analysis and controlled data.
