6 Language and the Public Sphere

Abstract
The chapter explores the question of what role language - here, above all, metalinguistic debate - plays in the public sphere. A definition of the public sphere is followed by considerations of Folk Linguistics, language politics and language controversies around the topics of gender and identity. Subsequently, essential aspects of the current debates in France are highlighted as examples. Here it becomes apparent that social debates and changes all have metalinguistic dimensions.
