17 Digital Communication and Internet Linguistics
-
Verena Thaler
Abstract
The so-called digital turn has brought about new forms of communication and massive changes in our communication habits within the last decades. These developments have given rise to a new field of research in Linguistics, recently referred to as Internet Linguistics, studying linguistic phenomena and new forms of language use that emerge in and through the Internet. The paper provides an overview of important changes and developments in the context of new media and related research with a focus on Romance languages. First, it discusses some terminological issues and analytical categories that are used to describe and classify forms of digital communication. Then, a brief overview of the research on digital communication is given, focussing on studies on Romance languages, especially French, Italian and Spanish. The major part of the paper is then interested in specific linguistic features of digital communication, specifically of informal genres of written digital communication, using examples from French and Spanish. Finally, further research perspectives in studies on digital communication in Romance languages are presented, three of which will be addressed in more detail.
