Abstract

Intercultural Communication has become a central domain of research and practice in Applied Linguistics. This chapter provides an overview of the historical development of Intercultural Communication as an academic field and its related areas of application. Since the 1990s it has established itself as an interdisciplinary field of research with a two-fold scope, dealing with both international exchange and cooperation combined with the challenges and realities of contemporary societies marked by multiculturalism and diversity. Building on the definition of fundamental concepts, this chapter highlights recent developments toward a more open and dynamic understanding of culture as well as toward the analysis of intercultural interaction processes that widely prevail over cross-cultural or comparative approaches. Finally, various intercultural fields of practice are presented, ranging from language learning and international mobility to intercultural training.
