8 Language Criticism and Language Consulting
-
Sybille Große
Abstract
Language criticism in the sense of a subjective evaluation of language use has a long tradition; however, the conceptualisation of language criticism as a scientifically based form of language evaluation only began in German studies in the second half of the 20th century. Nonetheless, language criticism also plays a major role in Romance languages. In the following chapter the concept of language criticism is described theoretically and is subsequently applied to various fields in the Romance languages: French, Italian and Spanish. Here, the idea of politically correct language use, feminist language criticism, and Internet language criticism are discussed. In addition, the relationship between language criticism and linguistic purism is explored through the example of the purism of foreign words, and that of language planning, which is illustrated by the current work of language academies on the Internet and style manuals from the Ibero-American area.
