11 Conversational Linguistics and Pragmalinguistics

Abstract
Conversational Linguistics and Pragmalinguistics have in common that they conceive of speaking as an activity that is universally characterised by dialogicity. Both disciplines explore communication as social practice and fulfil the profile of Applied Linguistics when they reintegrate their findings into society and contribute to building communicative and conversational competence. The basic concepts of both disciplines are integrated into Coseriu’s system of linguistic competence, which also provides the framework for the presentation of central research topics in the field of interactional linguistics. The idea of competence also provides the core for illustrating the application of Conversational Linguistics in foreign language teaching, focusing on concepts of cooperation and politeness.
