9 Language Diversity and Language Rights
-
Katrin Pfadenhauer
Abstract
The aim of the chapter is to examine the relationship between linguistic diversity and national and international legislation (officially intended to preserve and strengthen speakers of so-called minority languages), and to analyse the resulting paradoxes. After clarifying the basic concepts (linguistic diversity, linguistic power relations, linguistic rights, linguistic human rights, minority language, etc.) and establishing the theoretical framework, the focus is on the current language situation in Mexico and the legal status of the 68 indigenous languages officially spoken alongside Spanish. Special attention is given to the history of the interethnic relations, which is central to understanding the current situation in Mexico.
