5 Language and Space
-
Felix Tacke
Abstract
Beyond Language Geography, the link between language and space constitutes an ever more dynamic field of study, especially in Sociolinguistics. This chapter provides a survey of the most important approaches to the study of language and (geographical) space from the perspective of Applied Linguistics with a special focus on language planning. Among the links between speech, speakers, and languages on the one hand and geographical space on the other, the spatiality of languages and speakers will thus be foregrounded. In this context, this chapter includes definitions of the key concepts of linguistic territoriality, autochthony, and linguistic landscapes which concern the perceived and materialised links between languages, speech communities and ‘their’ territories. Furthermore, the spatiality of so-called ‘non-territorial’ languages, i.e. the languages of migrant communities, will be treated.
