Source of material

All solvents and other reagents were of analytical grade and the title compound was prepared by modification of the reported method [1], [2], [3], [4]. To an ethanol solution (5 mL) of 2-hydroxy-5-methyl-benzaldehyde (149.8 mg, 1.1 mmol) was added an ethanol solution (5 mL) of 1-(4-aminophenyl)-ethanone O-ethyl oxime (178.2 mg, 1 mmol). After stirring at 328 K for 9 h, the mixture was filtered at room temperature. The product was dried under vacuum and a yellow solid of title compound was obtained (yield 76.4%, m.p. 401–408 K). The crystals were obtained by slow evaporation from chloroform/ethanol (2:1) at room temperature. Elemantal analysis Anal. Calcd. For C18H20N2O2: C, 72.95%; H, 6.80%; N, 9.45%; Found: C, 72.91%; H, 6.86%; N, 9.41%.

Experimental details

Hydrogen atoms were placed in their geometrically idealized positions and constrained to ride on their parent atoms.

Comment

Oximes are compounds which carry a carbon-nitrogen double bond formed by the reactions of aldehydes or ketones with hydroxylamines [5], [6], [7]. They have been playing an important role in coordination chemistry [8], [9], [10]. Researchers have focused their interests on such complexes, for their applications. For example: it has been used to nonlinear optical materials field [11], [12], [13] and supramolecular architectures [14], [15], [16], etc.

The single-crystal structure of the title compound was determined by X-ray crystallography. The bond lengths are in normal ranges. In the title compound, there is a strong intramolecular O1—H1⋯N1 hydrogen bond interaction (d(N1⋯H1) = 1.88 Å, d(O1—H1) = 0.82 Å, d(O1⋯N1) = 2.61 Å).
