Abstract

Based on the observation that methods of historical semantics are not limited to mere single-word analyses, the article discusses the possibilities of using digital methods derived from the theory of distributional semantics (word embeddings, collocation analyses). In the case of German medieval literature, the relative smallness of the corpora proves to be a particular challenge, which is why the article argues for a scalable reading approach that combines macro and micro analysis. As an example, I will use three lexemes from the word field of virtue terms which interact dynamically with aesthetic values. In this way, I will test the extent to which digital methods can be helpful in analysing figures of aesthetic reflection.
