Abstract

The paper takes a methodological perspective and at the same time sheds light on the praxeology of researching historical semantics with digital means. It deals with the question of how so-called genuine metaphors can be identified in texts and how, in the next step, preliminary assumptions and procedures for an automatic detection of metaphorical text passages in larger text corpora can be determined. On the basis of theoretical decisions, but also of practical experience, the author draws a picture of the complex task of establishing a valid and applicable metaphor model for the purposes of historical hermeneutics. It demands a comprehensive understanding of presuppositions as well as procedures across disciplinary boundaries. To illustrate some of the difficulties in digitally capturing historical metaphors, a comparative evaluation of historical corpora from the period ʻaround 1900ʼ serves as a case study.
