Abstract

This pilot study, which was developed within the context of the CRC 1475 “Metaphors of Religion” at Ruhr University Bochum, examines the linguistic realization of religious metaphors in the 13th-century Middle High German (MHG) text Rheinisches Marienlob. Of particular interest for an annotation-based analysis are the syntactic and semantic patterns of these realizations. For this reason, the syntactic dependency annotation is taken as a starting point. The focus of this article, however, is on the contribution of semantic roles to metaphor analysis. Semantic role labeling is presented in an extended way, focusing on the target expression MHG wunte. The role inventory as well as difficulties with the annotation scheme are discussed.
