Abstract

This essay explores the poetological and metaphysical meanings of the word mixtûre, which appears in central passages in GottfriedʼsGottfried von StraßburgTristan Tristan and Konrad’sKonrad von WürzburgDer Trojanische Krieg Trojanerkrieg where it points out a specific tension between the sense and the sensuality of literature. The word mixtûre refers to the sensual impressions of colour and at the same time can be read as a description of the effects of the texts and their own epistemological order. Tracing the Latin term mixtura in corresponding theoretical discourses shows that, alongside the theory of colours or the notion of colores rhetorici, music theory in particular (ars musica) provides an explanation for the poetics of the texts in question. Against this background, the texts ultimately prove to express a consistent effort to justify their effects in a meaningful way. At the same time, however, it becomes apparent that both authors proceed in a specific way and present very different ideas of mixtûre.
