Abstract
Disney is one of the most successful and identifiable brands in the world (Knight, 2014). The Disney Corporation employs over 200,000 people worldwide and, as of May 2021, had reported sales of over $60 billion (Forbes, 2021). Since its earliest days of animated films, through to its global media empire today, Disney has become a corporate juggernaut (Mann and Budworth, 2018). Its resorts – situated in California, Florida, Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong and China – represent some of the most sought-after tourist destinations in the world. According to the Themed Entertainment Association (2019) over 155 million people attended Disney theme parks worldwide in 2019. These parks constitute hotels, golf courses, theme parks, rides, parades, characters and restaurants, and represent an immersive experience that seeks to suspend reality and provide a fantasy experience built on cultural romanticism, nostalgia and consumption (Giroux and Pollock, 2010).
