9 The Black Dahlia tour: Los Angeles, California, USA
-
David Wilson
Abstract
City of Angels, the epicentre of where dreams are made in the form of Hollywood, - has a long history in making stars in front of the silver screen. Countless individuals, fuelled by a desire for fame and nourished by the dazzling lights that call to them, promising fame and fortune a plenty, have ventured to Los Angeles. For a small lucky few, their hopes and dreams are realised – they join their idols in the pantheon of Hollywood legends, and may even etch their names into the very fabric of the city in the Hollywood hall of fame. When the lights fade, however, and the limousines disappear over the horizon, the perils of the pursuit of fame occasionally emerge and the darker underbelly shows. The murder of Elizabeth Short is arguably one of the earliest and most famous cases related to the perils of the pursuit of stardom. Her murder, still unsolved to this day, has sparked numerous books, film adaptations, conspiracy theories and naturally guided tours. There are numerous tours in which the murder of Short is included, but it is also important to note that tours generally cover a range of other high-profile murders including the Manson murders and the murder of actor Sal Mineo.
Black Dahlia; “The woman was lying on her back with her arms raised over shoulders, and her legs were spread in a twisted display of seductiveness. There were cuts and abrasions across her body, and her mouth had been sliced to extend her smile from ear to ear”
