Abstract

can Magaluf, a resort in Majorca – a beautiful island off the coast of Spain, to which millions of tourists flock each year – even remotely be considered a ‘dark destination’? Magaluf is particularly attractive to young people from Britain, Ireland, Germany and Scandinavia. They are drawn to the island because of the beautiful beaches and the almost guaranteed summer sun, but most come because of Magaluf’s famed nightlife. They are young and they want to have a good time. They want to get drunk with friends, and of course they want to hook up with good-looking strangers. What could be wrong with that? Isn’t it absurdly moralistic to find fault with the attitudes and behaviours of these young people? Aren’t those behaviours reasonably universal, inasmuch as young people have throughout history carried similar attitudes and engaged in similar behaviours? And mightn’t there be a regrettable element of class bigotry in problematising the behaviours of this group of young tourists? Shouldn’t we instead critique the entitled hedonists of the Bullingdon Club or the middle-class liberals who every year head off to Thailand, Bali or Barbados to get drunk and seek out one-night stands?

These are interesting questions in and of themselves, but they tend to negate the traditional imperative of social science, which of course is to objectively appraise social life free from the interference of advocacy groups and vested interests. To understand the world in which we live, we must dispense with common-sense interpretations and dig beneath the surface of social life.
