Abstract
On 21 February 21st, 2014, in the last days of the Ukrainian revolution, violence escalating and police snipers killing protestors, Victor Yanukovych fled the estate of Mezhyhirya in a helicopter, an estate where he has lived since 2002, first as pPrime mMinister and then as president of Ukraine (2010–2014) – after having spent the last three days stuffing his bags with luxury items, that is. The regime was overthrown. The next day, Euromaidan protesters stormed the Mezhyhirya residence: “everyone wants to see the humble home of their legitimate leader,”, as one of them put it. While everyone knew of the kleptocracy, corruption, fraudulent schemes, tax evasion, and money laundering even well prior to the revolution, many were still in shock and awe when seeing for themselves what has been hiding behind the previously impenetrable gates of the Mezhyhirya residence. In Novi Petrivtsi, 25 km from Kiev, carefully hidden from the public view behind guarded gates, the obscenely lavish Mezhyhirya complex turned out to feature golf courses, swimming pool, tennis court, yacht club and artificial lakes, racecourses and stables, luxury five-storey residence and three-storey guest house, winter garden, to a zoo (with kangaroos who did not survive the winter), greenhouses, collections of over 70 cars, of weapons and bullets, private chapel, karaoke bar, bowling, gyms, massage salons and more, much of it gold plated and equipped with antiques and enormous wealth of luxury goods. The cost of fittings, fixtures, and chandeliers, as well as the golden loaf of bread, has shocked many.
