Abstract

The Museum of Death that is located on Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood was founded by J. D. Healy and Catherine Shultz in 1995. It features a wide range of artefacts primarily related to the subject of death, such as crime and morgue scene photos, body bags, coffins, suicide devices, autopsy films, car accident photos, and skull collections. The museum is open seven days a week and admission costs $17. The self-guided tour lasts approximately an hour and is promoted as a mean through which the public can be educated about death in the USA. Along similar lines, there are no age restrictions based on the premise that death is a subject that affects us all. The endeavour was successful enough to underpin the foundation of a second Museum of Death, this time in New Orleans.

Homicide artefacts and souvenirs constitute the main selling point of the Museum of Death, as visitors seem to be holding a very genuine interest in exploring those items that relate to notorious criminals and their crimes. Some indicative comments on Trip Advisor are as follows:

• ‘’heard about this place by chance whilst in LA. A must see if you are into serial killers, gore, death etc. Some really awesome and shocking things on display. Reasonably priced to enter with cool souvenirs to buy.’’ (Trip advisor reviewer, 2019)

• ‘’It’s well worth spending some time here, and it covers what every one of us will be subject to. Many aspects of ritual and ceremony surrounding peoples’ demise are shown;
