Abstract

C14H9CoF4NO6, monoclinic, P21/n (no. 14), a = 6.1183(2) Å, b = 7.5688(2) Å, c = 32.5016(7) Å, β = 90.672(2)°, V = 1504.99(7) Å3, Z = 4, Rgt(F) = 0.0398, wRref(F2) = 0.1037, T = 293 K.

A part of the title crystal structure is shown in the figure. Table 1 contains crystallographic data and Table 2 contains the list of the atoms including atomic coordinates and displacement parameters.

Source of material

A mixture of 3,4,5,6-tetrafluoro-phthalic acid (H2F4ph, 24 mg, 0.1 mmol), 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethene (18 mg, 0.1 mmol), and Co(OAc)2.4H2O (24 mg, 0.1 mmol) was added to water (7 mL) in a 25 mL Teflon-lined autoclave. The mixture was heated at 393 K for 3 days and then slowly cooled to room temperature. Light pink block crystals were obtained.

Experimental details

The carbon bound hydrogen atoms were placed in calculated positions and refined using a riding model on attached atoms.

Discussion

In the last two decades, a large number of Co(II)-metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been reported in the literature due to their potential applications in many areas [4], [5], [6], [7], [8]. Co(II)-MOFs can be constructed from Co(II) ions and carboxylate and nitrogen-containing ligands. In most situations, N-containing ligands are electrically neutral, while carboxylate ligands are negatively charged. Among rod N-donor ligands, 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethene (bpe) can serve as a bridging ligand [9], [10], [11]. On the other hand, phthalic acid (1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid) and its derivatives, can yield predetermined networks [12], [13].

In the title complex, there are one Co(II) ion, two coordinated water molecules, one F4ph ligand, and half of bpe ligand in the asymmetric unit (Figure). Co1 is six-coordinated with a distorted octahedral geometry by three O atoms from three F4ph ligands and one N atom of one bpe ligand, and two coordinated water molecules with an O5—Co1—O6′′ angle of 176.53(9)°. The Co—N bond length is 2.144(2) Å and the Co—O ones are in the range of 2.089(2) and 2.121(2) Å. Each F4ph ligand acts as a μ3-bridge, in which one carboxylate group adopts a bi-monodentate bridging mode to link two cobalt(II) atoms while another adopts a monodentate mode (see the figure). Co(II) ions are linked by μ2-bpe ligands and μ3-F4ph ligands to form a 2-D layer. In the title complex, there are several hydrogen bonds: hydrogen bonding between water and carboxylate O atoms with d(O⋯O) = 2.729(3), 2.732(3) Å and 2.728(3) Å. The 2-D layers are further linked by hydrogen bonds to generate a 3-D architecture.
