Abstract
The library of the Basel charterhouse is one of the most important of its time and continues to be of great significance for research into the culture and intellectual life of medieval and early-modern Basel. Whereas the sources for the later period, after the reorganisation of the library by Prior Jacob Lauber (1480-1502) in the 1480s and 90s, are abundant, our information for the earlier period, from the foundation in 1401 to 1480, is much less good. In fact, we are largely in the dark regarding this period. The present study sets out to provide an overview of the history of the library and to set out the possibilities for research into the various phases of its history. Special attention is paid to the period under the prior Heinrich Arnoldi (1449-1480), who seems also to have acted as librarian. In particular, the article attempts, on the basis of an analysis of the medieval shelfmarks in comparison with the library catalogues compiled by Urban Moser (ca. 1515) and Georg Carpentarius (after 1520), to offer preliminary conclusions regarding the content and organisation of the library in the time of Heinrich Arnoldi and Jacob Lauber.
