Abstract

The analysis of Augsburg, University Library, Cod. III.1.2 o 23 (›Alsatian Legenda aurea‹), a utilitarian manuscript associated with Basel on the basis of the mention of the city in an indulgence, exemplifies the research potential of an approach based on the history of transmission, revealing the interplay between dynamic fields of action with their interconnected structures and a single fixed location. Whereas the conclusions regarding the history of the manuscript may remain hypothetical, and can be challenged, numerous insights into the cultural life of late medieval Basel emerge incidentally. Both the content and material aspects of the manuscript provide insights into the search for redemption in monastic and lay circles (the cult of the saints, indulgences) and the attempts of civic and monastic authorities to respond to these needs, both in their actions and in the employment of media. A consideration of the role of Ambrosius Alantsee, who may possibly have owned the manuscript, shows that the citizens of Basel were not only engaged in cultural exchanges within the region, but also with more distant institutions (Swabia, Cluny).
