Abstract
Heinrich Arnoldi (1407-1487), prior of the Basel Charterhouse from 1449/50- 1480, is known as the author of some 283 religious texts in Latin, many of them prayers. This article presents a review of his work and its transmission, before proceeding to a detailed study of a group of 27 Meditationes et orationes addressed to holy women, taking the prayers to St Katherine of Alexandria and St Odilia as examples. The choice of holy women (virgines et continentes - a formulation that allowed the inclusion of St Elisabeth of Thuringia and St Bridget of Sweden), all addressed individually as patrona and as brides of Christ who experienced their marriage with Christ in death, is explained by reference to the cult of saints in the Charterhouse, as documented in particular by prayers to be spoken before the altar of holy virgins at the entrance to the chapterhouse, the monastery’s collection of relics, and the official Collectarium of the Carthusian Order. The prayers to St Katherine and St Odilia are edited from four manuscripts in an appendix.
