Abstract

Plays, as one of the mass media of the Early Modern Period, stood in a rather particular relationship to ›space‹, whether it was the public space for which they were conceived or the imaginary space of their action and reception, which they made visible by their performance as social action. This contribution is concerned with the significance of the ›Weltspiegel‹ (›Mirror of the World‹) by the Basel preacher Valentin Boltz, performed in 1550, together with the subsequent printed editions, for the medial representation and formation of a new identity for the refomed city of Basel. The literary play presented the ideal of a social order based on Christian religion that was to be achieved not just in a civic context within the community through social discipline and a rigid political ethic, but also went further and presented the townspeople, who came together in an exemplary manner on stage, as the citizens of a political Utopia, the united society of the Swiss Federation that while remaining loyal to the union was in truth confessionally split.
