Abstract
The Basel jurist Sebastian Brant consistently had recourse to the printed medium for the publication of his works and editions. This also applies to the collection of religious poems in the ›Carmina in laudem beatae Mariae virginis‹ (1494), published by his friend the Basel jurist Johannes Bergmann. Short printed texts that had previously been dispersed are combined here in a single edition. This same procedure underlies the collection of texts in the ›Varia Sebastiani Brant carmina‹ (1498). The structure of these collections, the underlying intentions of several near-contemporary augmented editions, and the varous different modes of thematic coherence are examined. The religious poems with their emphasis on the veneration of the Virgin Mary and prayer provide an insight into the piety practised by the intellectual elites around 1500. The secular, political poems show how Brant represented the interests of Maximilian I’s reign. Both collections bear witness to the cultural, intellectual and literary physiognomy of the Basel jurist.
