Abstract

This contribution is devoted to the journey undertaken by Margaret of Savoy on the occasion of her marriage, which was to bring her to Basel for ten days in 1445. Margaret’s spectacular appearance in Basel not only marked a decisive moment in her life, when seen in the context of her personal biography, it also conveys a distinctive impression of the city of Basel. Her father, Duke Amadeus VIII of Savoy, had been elected Pope Felix V at the Council of Basel. The bridal procession from Geneva to Heidelberg, which Margaret was to undertake in order to meet up with her bridegroom Duke Louis IV of the Palatinate, was a similarly prominent event. The representation of princely power displayed by this noblewoman who was the ›daughter of the pope‹ was the subject of great interest. The public display of the House of Savoy in the Basel context reveals in a concrete manner how media were employed and gives a sense of their effectiveness in spatial terms. The self-perception of the House of Savoy in the Basel environment so conveyed, and determined by the presence of the pope, is made visible by Margaret’s presence. Her literary glorification in the work of the papal secretary Martin Le Franc, the elaborate descriptions of Margaret’s entry into the city in the writings of the Basel chroniclers, and above all her luxurious accommodation and spectacular balls give an impression of how the city witnessed the splendour of Savoyard courtly culture. Its symbols, its sounds and its rituals made a great impression on the citizens. It was indeed in Basel that Margaret was entrusted to her bridegroom’s escort from the Palatinate. The papal treasure, however, was to remain for several years in Basel, in the care of the civic authorities, as security for her dowry, and thus served to keep the memory of Margaret of Savoy’s time in Basel very much alive.
