Basler Liederbücher? Lyrikhandschriften im Kontext der Basler Literaturszene

Abstract
While regional networks or religious institutions and their textual production have been extensively studied, the role of urban settings as a space in which secular texts circulate is much more difficult to delineate. The current essay assesses lyric song collections. While neither authors who demonstrably worked in Basel, nor individual manuscripts originating from the city offer firm evidence for an urban circle of lyric poets around Konrad von Wurzburg, as sometimes claimed in older scholarship, it is notable that song collections with connections to Basel are characterized by a mixture of secular and religious pieces, as well as by a readership familiar with Latin as well as the vernacular. The Charterhouse plays an important role in preserving not only religious, but also secular songs, and the sixteenth century partbooks of vernacular songs point to the significance of the university in fostering an interest in song collections.
