Abstract
The introduction serves to sketch out the state of research regarding the literary and cultural history of the city of Basel in the Middle Ages and Early Modern period. The concepts of cultural space and medium, it is suggested, can provide a theoretical framework and focus for the studies brought together in the volume. This is followed by a diachronic cross-section through the literary history of Basel from the beginnings in the twelfth century to 1500; religious and secular drama, a genre of particular interest for research into cultural space, is treated as far as 1550. From the perspective of the history of media this time-frame allows the period of transition from manuscript culture to early printing to come into view. Resumees of the individual articles are integrated into the text and thus presented within a broader historical and literary-historical context.
