Objective
Linguistics publishes articles addressing research questions of current or general relevance that make a significant contribution to our understanding of human language as a system of communication or a cognitive, social and historical phenomenon. This includes aspects of grammatical organization (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax) as well as questions of meaning and use (semantics, pragmatics, discourse). Studies may deal with linguistic systems as instantiated in speaking, signing, writing and other modes of communication, as well as the language users themselves and their communities (e.g. psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics). The focus may be on one or several languages, the perspective may be synchronic or diachronic, the methodology may be qualitative or quantitative, and the approach may be exploratory or confirmatory. Linguistics publishes up to two special issues a year in these areas, for which it welcomes proposals.

Overt pronouns in null subject languages: experimental investigation of Kashubian, Polish, and Silesian

Interpretive differences between overt subject pronouns relative to null subject pronouns are commonly considered a defining property of Consistent Null Subject Languages (CNSLs), in contradistinction to Partial Null Subject Languages (PNSLs). In this article, we present the results of two experimental studies which challenge this view with respect to two environments: variable binding and pronominal coreference (binding) under double embedding. Having shown that given the two phenomena, all four logically possible patterns of binding of overt pronouns are attested in languages with null arguments, we propose that a theoretically meaningful typological pro- drop classification should move away from facts surrounding the binding or interpretation of overt pronouns, and should instead focus on what kind of derivational mechanism a language has to yield a null subject structure. Specifically, CNSLs are characterised by a ‘rich’ inflection-based mechanism, in contrast to PNSLs, for which alternative proposals have been made.

This paper illustrates the crucial role of “internal locatives” (Maienborn, C. 2001. On the position and interpretation of locative modifiers. Natural Language Semantics 9(2). 191–240.) in the clause-internal distribution and interpretation of locative expressions headed by the stative locative morpheme zài ‘be at’ in Mandarin Chinese. Internal locatives describe spatial properties that are part of an event described by a verb, contrasting with event locative modifiers in the Davidsonian sense. I show that zài locatives occur in up to four positions in the clause: two pre-verbal and two post-verbal. Internal location is encoded in (i) a lower pre-verbal modifier position and (ii) a compounding structure I label “V- zài ”, where zài immediately follows the verb. Although both express internal location, the pre-verbal internal locative is a modifier, while V- zài forms a complex predicate with the preceding verb, implemented as set intersection and event summation respectively (Rothstein 2004. Structuring events: A study in the semantics of lexical aspect . Oxford: Blackwell). This distinction accounts for an asymmetry long-noted in the Chinese linguistics literature: with a manner of motion verb, pre-verbal zài only has a static location interpretation while V- zài allows both static and goal interpretations. Elsewhere, the outermost pre-verbal position hosts a Davidsonian event modifier, while the post-verbal complement position (following verb and object nominal) hosts locative arguments, available only with certain verb classes, e.g., verbs of putting. This work presents a finer-grained view of how locative components integrate into the clause, bringing together research on locative modification and research on the encoding of locative result, which hitherto have tended to be explored independently of each other. Finally, it highlights the crosslinguistic relevance of internal locatives, originally described in German.

Low topics are not IP-external: a reply to Alzayid (2025)

This article defends the hypothesis that right-dislocated elements in Najdi Arabic (NA) are IP-internal low topics, contra Alzayid's (2025) recent claims of their IP-external status (Alzayid, Ali. 2025. On low topics in Najdi Arabic: A rejoinder to Alshamari and Jarrah (2022). Linguistics 63.6). Through a critical evaluation of Alzayid’s three empirical arguments – centred on NPI licensing, subject-verb agreement in VOS configurations, and wh-focus interactions – this reply demonstrates that his conclusions rest on misinterpreted diagnostics or theoretically untenable assumptions. Drawing on the cartographic tradition and phase theory, I argue that right-dislocated constituents exhibiting clitic doubling and definiteness effects are best analysed as merged within the low periphery, between TP and vP. The Agree relations between T and the low subject remain intact without invoking pretheoretical machinery or IP-external adjunction. Moreover, I show that NPI behaviour reflects semantic indefiniteness rather than syntactic height. This analysis reinforces the view that discourse-related material in Arabic clause structure can occupy structurally encoded low positions, thus supporting a richly articulated left and low periphery.

The influence of formal similarity on creativity in name-based word formation: the case of personal name blends in German

This article investigates experimentally elicited personal name blends (PN blends, such as Benjalene from Benjamin and Helene ) as an understudied type of name-based word formation in German. It focuses on the influence of formal similarity between PN blends and their name constituents on the creativity of PN blends. We adopt a usage-based approach to blending and a definition of creativity as a combination of the degree of the blend’s originality and the recoverability grade of its source names to study the following research questions: (1) How does formal similarity (measured with normalized indel similarity) between a blend and its name constituents influence the interpretation of PN blends as more or less creative? (2) Which factors significantly predict the creativity of PN blends bearing different similarity grades? and (3) How do usage-based factors (linguistic experience with blends and domain-based knowledge) influence the indel similarity values of personal name blends? The statistical analysis based on the results of two experiments shows that PN blends with high grades of normalized indel similarity (e.g., Renastian ) are more recoverable but not less original than those with low normalized indel similarity (e.g., Reba ). The factors significantly predicting the creativity of PN blends of different similarity grades are the participants’ knowledge about the domains in which PN blends usually occur and the number of correctly predicted name constituents for the recoverability ratings, and the number of correctly predicted name constituents for the originality ratings. Both the linguistic experience with blends and domain-based knowledge significantly influence the similarity values of personal name blends. The results regarding their contribution to the (usage-based) theory of word-formation creativity are discussed.

While research into the interaction of language and sexuality is becoming increasingly widespread, there is still little sociophonetic sexuality work that considers female speakers and much of the previous research focuses on a binary distinction of gay women compared to straight women. This study instead considers a distinct identity that distinguishes female speakers based on their participation in local football. This analysis shows that participants who are part of their local football team have significantly different /s/ productions than those who were not part of the team. This article suggests that this difference may connect to aspects of gender identity and sexuality and discusses the societal factors that may influence this relation between identity and football.

Not so SUBTLE(X): word frequency estimates and their fit to sentential reading times in interaction with predictability

Frequency and predictability are two prominent psycholinguistic variables that determine the ease of word comprehension and have informed models of language processing. Here, we pooled the data from five self-paced reading studies to investigate (1) the usefulness of three well-known frequency databases of German in accounting for word reading times in context (i.e., the SUBTLEX-DE, CELEX, and dlexDB databases), and (2) whether frequency and predictability have additive or interactive effects on lexical processing. Regarding (1), goodness of fit comparisons between the three frequency measures showed that, in the majority of models, dlexDB frequencies performed best (in contrast to earlier investigations recommending to use SUBTLEX), even though nearly all frequency effects were statistically invariant and dwarfed by the contributions of other more potent variables such as predictability or trial number. Regarding (2), we found that, even though predictability influenced reading times, there was no evidence for interactive effects of frequency and predictability. Our results call into question the current default practice in many psycholinguistic studies to rely on subtitle norms when it comes to estimating lexical frequencies, but they also suggest that frequency effects may be negligible in paradigms which promote contextual word-by-word reading. Our findings are more in line with modular models of language comprehension in which lexical access operates independently from contextual predictability.

Opening open science to all: demystifying reproducibility and transparency practices in linguistic research

In recent years, numerous fields of research have seen a push for increased reproducibility and transparency. As a result, specific transparency practices have emerged, such as open access publishing, preregistration, sharing data, analyses, and code, performing study replications, and declaring positionality and conflicts of interest. While many agree that open science practices represent a positive step forward in improving scientific rigor, these practices, by and large, have not been adopted in the field of linguistics (Bochynska et al. 2023. Reproducible research practices and transparency across linguistics. Glossa Psycholinguistics 2(1). 1–36). Few, if any, researchers have had explicit instruction on the practices of open science as part of their professional training. Nonetheless, today’s speech researcher is expected to be up to date on the current protocols of open science in order to incorporate the methodological practices aimed at improving reproducibility/replicability. The present work intends to help make open science practices understandable and accessible to researchers in linguistics from all backgrounds and at every stage, from students/early career researchers to senior researchers and advisors. We outline eight specific open science practices that linguists can adopt to make their research more open, transparent, inclusive, and accessible to a wider audience.

Word-formation at the crossroads of productivity, creativity, and structural complexity

Productivity has long been one of the central topics in the study of word-formation. Research in this area has primarily focused on affixation and treated it independently of the creative performance of language users. This paper offers new insights into the nature of word-formation by discussing productivity within the context of two other related phenomena: creative naming acts of language users, and the structural complexity of a word-formation system. These phenomena have typically been studied in isolation, with an emphasis on their outcomes. A cognitively grounded onomasiological approach to word-formation enables a deeper understanding of the relationship between these factors. Instead of concentrating on the products of word-formation, it focuses on the process of coining new complex words, i.e., the creative act of naming by a language user. Rather than a phenomenon detached from language users, this perspective presents word-formation as one deeply tied to their creative potential, manifested through their individual creative performances. The paper highlights how this psychologically grounded factor, combined with the available means of word-formation, influences the productivity of word-formation processes and rules. By emphasizing the processual aspect of word-formation, the paper defines the productivity rate of a word-formation process or rule as the cumulative result of all individual creative naming acts. These acts take place within a competitive environment of all available word-formation means – not limited to affixation. The competition is shaped by the structural richness of the word-formation system, and directly affects the productivity of word-formation processes and rules, thereby influencing the evolution of the system itself. Ultimately, the paper underscores the necessity of viewing each act of naming as the outcome of an interplay between various objective and subjective factors.

Grammar in time: pragmatic contingency and non-restrictive which

In this paper, we draw upon dimensions of syntax, prosody and pragmatics to address a lacuna in current understandings of the non-restrictive (‘appositive’/‘supplementary’) relative which -clause. Contrary to its portrayal in descriptive grammars, naturally occurring data shows that this clause is commonly produced after a main clause has come to prosodic completion, that is, as a grammatical increment. Its usage therefore raises the interactional and pragmatic questions of why speakers should initially produce an utterance that is, to all intents and purposes, complete, and therefore what the subsequent production of the increment serves. By examining the production of non-restrictive relative which -increments with respect to their main (‘host’) clause, we subject the Gricean maxim of Quantity to empirical investigation, exposing both its strengths and its shortcomings. We identify two potentially conflicting pragmatic constraints to which speakers orient in the use of this grammatical object: the principle of minimization (an empirical specification of the Quantity maxim), and a principle of progressivity (an orientation to forwarding trajectories of action). This study therefore reveals the extent to which grammar serves as an interactional resource, implicated in the projects of alignment and disalignment, both of understanding and of stance. We thus see the intersection of time and grammar to interactional ends.

Mora augmentation in Lowland East Cushitic: implications for typology and studies of metrification

Moras play an important role in Lowland East Cushitic tone/accent assignment, but their contributions elsewhere in these languages’ grammars are not well established. This paper reports on the results of a survey of languages in this sub-group, showing two types of mora augmentation (i.e., the addition of a mora), both of which primarily involve vocalic moras. In some instances, the goal of augmentation is to satisfy the language’s overarching metrical well-formedness requirements. In others, its result is the creation of a particular template, albeit one entailed by a morpheme’s subcategorization requirements. These outcomes have a bearing on typological generalizations reported by Davis, Stuart & Isao Ueda. 2006. Prosodic vs. morphological mora augmentation. Lexicon Forum 2. 121–143 concerning expected correlations between a language’s impetus for augmentation (prosody vs. morphology) and its preferred means of implementation (via vocalic vs. consonantal moras). We argue that some augmentations in Lowland East Cushitic, despite being required by morphology, are best considered to be prosodically motivated, an outcome that bears on the predictions of the aforementioned typology. The presence of and motivations for these augmentations have further implications for our understanding of other aspects of Cushitic languages that are yet poorly understood by linguists, namely details of their prosodic and metrical structures.

On low topics in Najdi Arabic: a rejoinder to Alshamari and Jarrah (2022)

In this article empirical evidence is presented against the existence of a discourse-laden low IP in Najdi Arabic as proposed by Alshamari, Murdhy & Marwan Jarrah. (2022. The fine structure of low topics in Najdi Arabic. Linguistics 60(4). 1011–1038). In particular, we argue that right dislocation in Najdi Arabic, qua a discursive articulation rooted in topicality, is at odds with the claim that there is a low IP, proposing a clause-external analysis of low topics instead.

Why modelling space is hard: no evidence for a serial founder effect in Polynesian phoneme inventories

In recent years there has been an increased interest in computational modeling of spatial phenomena in typology. While the main focus of most work so far has been on direct language contact, there are two different types of spatial dynamics of interest to typologists and areal linguists: language expansion, and asymmetric contact effects. In this paper we present five statistical techniques to model phylogenetic and spatial relations between languages. We illustrate these techniques with a case study on Polynesian phoneme inventory sizes, and show that there is robust evidence for asymmetric contact effects from Non-Polynesian on Polynesian, but little evidence for expansion effects within Polynesian. In other words, we do not find convincing evidence for a serial founder effect in Polynesian phoneme inventory sizes. We also argue that we are still far from having a complete understanding of how to model all spatial dynamics that can affect language contact, and that more attention should be paid to these issues.

What contact did to Yoruba morphosyntax

In this article, I show that, due to the influence of English, major changes have occurred in Yoruba morphosyntax. The changes I identify include (i) the emergence of a transitive-marking Mid Tone Syllable (MTS) on loan verbs; (ii) the emergence of a pattern in which native verbs select accusative weak pronouns while loan verbs select genitive weak pronouns; (iii) changes in word order; (iv) syntactic doubling; and (v) category changes that apply only to loanwords. These changes have led to different forms of synchronic variation in the language. I show that the resulting variations fall into three major descriptive categories: free variation, lexicon-driven variation, and stratification-driven variation. Contact-induced stratification-driven variation exhibits two of the three patterns of the core-periphery structure of the lexicon (Brian Hsu and Karen Jesney, “Weighted scalar constraints capture the typology of loanword adaptation” [2018]), namely the “subset at periphery” and “superset at periphery” patterns. The Yoruba data exhibit an additional pattern that I describe as “complementary subsets”. Although the core-periphery structure of the lexicon (Junko Itô and Armin Mester, “The core-periphery structure of the lexicon and constraints on reranking” [1995] and “The phonological lexicon” [1999]) has been largely shown to have consequences for the module of phonology, the Yoruba data show that the core-periphery structure of the lexicon can be consequential for the syntactic module as well.

Decoding case markers: L1 Chinese L2 Japanese learners’ comprehension of Japanese OSV sentences

It is widely acknowledged that L2 learners whose native language lacks case markers often encounter difficulties when trying to acquire the usage of case markers in a second language. This article investigates whether L2 Japanese learners whose native language lacks case markers are able to use case marking information to comprehend Japanese OSV sentences in real time. A picture-sentence matching truth value judgment experiment was created in both listening and reading versions. A proficiency test was also developed to measure the Japanese proficiency of L2 learners. A group of L1 Chinese L2 Japanese learners and a control group of L1 Japanese speakers were recruited for this study. The findings suggest that L1 Chinese L2 Japanese learners can utilize case markers to interpret Japanese OSV sentences online, with their accuracy strongly predicted by their Japanese proficiency.

On the non-homogeneity of expletive negation in Greek and beyond

Expletive negative markers, i.e., negative markers that do not reverse the truth conditions of the sentence in which they occur, have been reported to appear in a wide array of languages and in a fairly large set of syntactic environments. Previous research has shown that expletive negation is a non-homogeneous phenomenon. Focusing on Greek, I motivate two general claims related to this non-homogeneity: (i) Greek expletive negation hosts can be classified into two linguistically relevant groups, depending on whether they feature the standard negative marker dhen or the modal negative marker min . (ii) The semantic contribution of the expletive occurrences of dhen and min retains at least parts of the meaning of their respective non-expletive counterparts. After presenting some first evidence that the dichotomy of expletive negation hosts motivated by the Greek data extends to other languages, I submit the following hypothesis as a novel promising perspective in the study of expletive negation cross-linguistically: The bi-partite distinction between dhen -expletive negation hosts and min -expletive negation hosts may be cross-linguistically valid, suggesting that expletive negation hosts across languages are divided into two classes: (a) a class of expletive negation licensors that obscure the truly negative semantics of the featured negative markers, and (b) a class of modal expletive negation licensors that feature expletive negative markers corresponding to the spell-out of modal or deontic ordering sources.

The development of imperfective and subjunctive marking in Hewramî

Contemporary dialects of Goranî (a Northwestern Iranic language spoken in Kurdistan) exhibit considerable variation in the formation of tense-aspect-mood categories. It has long been recognized that compatibility of the indicative/imperfective prefix mi- or the subjunctive prefix bi- with present-tense verb stems is phonologically conditioned. However, all attempts to identify the specific conditioning environments have failed. In this article, we reexamine the diachronic development of these affixes, showing that subsequent sound changes have obscured the original conditioning environment for the retention of these affixes. Early work on Hewramî (the main variety of Goranî) shows how the pattern of verbs that have lost the prefixes has begun to be extended to the verbs that take these prefixes for synchronically opaque reasons. The least frequent of these verbs were the first to begin the process of extension, showing inconsistent marking in these early works. Moreover, younger generations continue this process of extension using many more unmarked verbs compared to older speakers. The findings of this paper have implications for cyclic developments in the domain of tense and aspect.

The influence of prescriptivism on French verbal defectiveness

Words that speakers and dictionaries deem to be morphologically defective (and thus unacceptable) are often found in corpora, suggesting a disconnect between judgements about such words and usage of them. This paper explores the hypothesis that social and contextual factors may help explain why defective words are often attested despite speakers’ intuitions that they should not be. We carry out a study on French, proposing that some verbs conventionally analysed as defective in this language are not so much examples of ineffable ungrammaticality as they are examples of social stigmatisation. We perform an acceptability judgement task which finds that the acceptability of defective words is inversely correlated with the extent to which participants orient to prescriptivist discourses circulating in French society, and depends also on the emphasis that the task places on taking a prescriptive attitude to language. The hypothesis that speakers’ metalinguistic awareness is key to accounting for speakers’ felt sense of defectiveness is further substantiated by the fact that acceptability of defective items is inversely proportional to the frequency of their lexeme, suggesting that the amount of evidence speakers have about a lexeme plays an important role in how acceptable the item is perceived to be.

Manual wh-signs and English wh-mouthings differentiate BSL content and polar questions

How do deaf BSL signers signal polar and content questions? This study quantitatively investigates the manual and non-manual forms used to signal polar and content questions during dyadic conversations documented in the BSL Corpus. We found that non-manual movements such as eye, eyebrow and/or head movements do not differentiate content and polar questions in BSL. Instead, it is the presence or absence of conventionalised wh -forms that most strongly differentiates content questions in BSL, and these wh -forms can be signed in BSL and/or mouthed in English. These findings challenge the traditional manual versus non-manual paradigm for analysing polar and content questions in signed languages, while demonstrating how corpus methods can further our understanding of signed language variation and use.

The many guises of productivity: a case-study of Spanish inchoative constructions

This study investigates the productivity of a family of inchoative constructions in (Peninsular) Spanish ( empezar a + inf., echar a + inf.) and the way it correlates with semantic openness. Productivity is defined as lexical openness of a slot (here the infinitive) of a construction. A range of productivity measures (e.g., type/token ratio, hapax/token ratio, and other parameters related to the frequency of the most frequent types) are discussed and compared. Semantic openness is operationalized on the basis of distributional semantics, yielding two measures viz. semantic range and semantic sparsity . The correlations between productivity measures and semantics are studied by means of a Principal Components Analysis. It is shown that the so-called ‘anti-productivity’ measures (related to entrenchment due to high token frequency) on the one hand, and the productivity measures (including the hapax-based ones, traditionally associated with extensibility) on the other hand, strongly correlate and constitute opposites along the same dimension of lexical openness. In addition, the semantic measures strongly correlate with productivity, which suggests that often semantic and lexical openness go hand in hand in this dataset. As to the behavior of the individual auxiliaries (= micro-constructions), they appear to be rather extreme, showing very productive and less productive profiles.

Peripheries and their internal structure: an empirical analysis of left- and right-peripheral sequences across written English discourse

This article investigates the distribution, linear ordering and functions of sequences of linguistic elements occurring at the left and right peripheries of discourse units across three genres of written English discourse. Based on a corpus of news reports, commentaries and personal narratives, the paper aims to account for discourse-genre-specific preferences in the use of peripheral two-part sequences such as and so , but I think or now though . The data show considerable variation across genres in terms of (i) which formal types of sequences occur at the peripheries, (ii) how peripheral elements are sequentially ordered, and (iii) which discourse-pragmatic functions left- and right-peripheral sequences fulfil in written English discourse. The observed variation in the use of peripheral sequences across news reports, commentaries and personal narratives can be explained by discourse-related factors as well as the specific communicative purposes of each genre. The present article argues for a prototype-anchored conceptualization of the internal structure of discourse units: On the one hand, the left and right peripheries are conceptualized as containing a wide range of – more and less prototypical – linguistic elements (i.e. extra-clausal constituents and adjuncts); on the other hand, the boundary between core and periphery is conceptualized as fuzzy and gradient.
