Ein Kapitel aus dem Buch Handbook of British Travel Writing

Abstract

The British traveller Freya Stark (1893-1993) was a prolific writer. Her travelogues, autobiographies, and volumes of letters detail her journeys in Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and along the ancient trade routes of Europe and the Middle East. Particularly in her early travelogues, Stark combines self-deprecating humour with detailed observations, displaying social skills that would prove invaluable in her later role as a propaganda officer for the British government during WWII. Her travelogues touch on issues of gender, imperialism, travel, and tourism, deftly packaged for a home audience. Above all, Stark is concerned with movement as a fundamental aspect of human existence, and her writing at its best becomes a sublime mode of self-investigation.
