Abstract

This article seeks to recover the importance of an eighteenth-century author whose work, well received during his lifetime and for much of the following century, has had relatively little attention in more recent times. As a travel writer, Thomas Pennant was a pioneer of the Home Tour and left a range of legacies across many disciplines, including history, geology, natural history, economic history and art. Rediscovering his many-layered, multi-voiced texts opens up new possibilities for critical engagement with the period.
